Now for what I actually wanted to post about today: HIMYM! First, HIMYM's rating increase in season 4 has been huge! It's beaten its nemesis, Dancing with the Stars, four weeks in a row in the A18-49 demo, and was a top 20 show for that demo last week! A lot of those folks who stopped in to sample when Britney was on last spring stuck around, and no wonder.

Kristin Dos Santos at E! has confirmed that Heidi and Spencer from The Hills will be on the show in January, but don't panic until you read how they'll be used.

I think we have our answer about whether Alyson Hannigan's real-life pregnancy will be written into the show. Personally, I'm not too freaked out that it will ruin everything OMG, but unlike the TWOP recapper, I really enjoyed last night's show. It was full of patented Marshall-and-Lily-are-insane-and-perfect-for-each-other-ness, and Ted-and-Robin-are-adorable-but-so-not-perfect-for-each-other-ness, and Barney being, well, Barney. And everyone is affected by tiny socks. Though I could have done without "Cats in the Cradle" Barney.

Did we know before that Robin has a carry permit? Or that she regularly shoots cans off the roof? Could she be more awesome? I adore her, and I'm excited for she and Ted to be roommates.

For those of you that haven't yet visited NotAFathersDay.com, I encourage you to do so. Barney even got GNB to sponsor!

Thoughts?

\:D/ the postcards on the website!! Priceless.

I hadn't heard that Alyson Hannigan was pregnant (how pretty that baby will be!!), but I liked the storyline even before knowing that. To me, it certainly feels like the the truth right now - BABIES EVERYWHERE!

I loved that the husband of Lily's friend the freaked out mom works out of their house because he's a pot dealer.

But what is the deal with Marshall's hair!?

Yeah, that doesn't seem like particularly apt hair for a corporate lawyer, at least to me, but I do like his hair a little longer, aesthetically.

I don't think Marshall and Lily would be ruined by a baby. The thing about the baby jumping the shark thing that people forget is that it's not a problem if the set up is already there. If you've got a married couple you're not really tying them down with a baby. It can be done--you just have to make sure they've got outs for when you need them without the baby.

The greatest example, of course, being I Love Lucy where they got shows out of the stuff with the baby but in general got rid of him when he was inconvenient. (It's especially hilarious when you remember that the whole traveling portion of the show was post-Little Ricky, so you've got Lucy calling the kid on his birthday while on an ever-extending European tour.)

Unemployed Robin is hilarious. The show surprised me--I expected her to join up with Barney's group. But of course both she and Barney are actually perfect for each other with their hidden vulnerabilities to socks. With nobody realizing that that's pretty much the whole reason anybody has kids. I mean, what else reason is there? It's not like anybody sits around dreaming about carpooling and college tuition payments.

Love the whole thing about Ted already being a dad, which he totally is. There's something great about acknowledging that these men totally exist. (Actually, that's one of the interesting things about Ted as a character, the way they show the conflict between his Dad self and his stupid single guy self.)

I always think of Mad About You, where even though they started out married the whole thing went awry around the kid, partly because they had to work on having the kid first, and partly because they were such self-involved characters that watching them try not to be self-involved as parents wasn't that interesting. HIMYM's advantage is that these characters aren't epically self-involved in the first place--even Barney. So watching Marshall and Lily have kids isn't as much of a gear shift as, say, the Friends.

OMG, Mad About You. I barely watched that show but I hated it when I did. I remember the show where the baby cried the whole episode and they had an irritating conversation about it and about their marriage during it. Blech. In general I think it's always a big mistake when you have people have trouble having a baby. On Friends it seemed like they avoided the usual pitfalls until they had Monica and Chandler go for it--that's when we got all the goopy cliche stuff about how awesome parenting was blah blah blah.

Marshall and Lily would obviously just be their usual kooky selves with a baby--at least that's how I imagine them. I remember one baby moment on Friends I found hilarious was when Rachel and Ross got locked out the apartment and Ross has this sarcastic monologue about all the things that could be happening to the baby while they're locked outside.
