Why is shit getting real on LJ? I have (obviously) been out of the loop the past week.

They're instating a new friends page for everyone—no more custom look on your friends page. It's facebook-like, black type on a light grey or possibly white background, and it's pretty ugly. It has an endless scroll though apparently you can turn it off. There's also some sort of odd shuffling of the paid accounts where rather than paid/permanent vs. free, there will be some sort of "elite" thing and then no more paid accounts that you can add. Instead there will be a menu of add-ons that you can purchase a la carte. So who knows how that is going to work.

On top of that they've been reducing the US staff, which is why every time they make announcements people freak out, because they make the announcements in Russian and the machine translations are imperfect.

But I think it's the new friends page that might send people off LJ even more than they have been and I hope they'll finally come over here. You know how people like to customize, and the whole thing is sort of a mess. I will probably be moving to crossposting but not allowing comments over there in the new year, and I won't be posting fic over there anymore (because seriously enough with having to split up longer fics into chunks to get past the posting limit). So yeah, people are pretty grumbly at the mo.
