West Side Story opened on Broadway 50 years ago and there was a special on NPR tonight in its honor. Which of course reminded me of a thread back in the day on [livejournal.com profile] nocturne_alley when [livejournal.com profile] seamus_f and [livejournal.com profile] turpinol (RIP) cast West Side Story using their classmates. Enjoy.

I am finding that my current trend is to not post for a while and then go nuts with the spam. I feel that since these things even out, I am not going to worry about it.

The writers and the readers. Cut because it came out longer than I thought. )

Of course, both of these thoughts are looking for people to be responsible, courteous adults, a behaviour I find not only sadly lacking around here, but unfortunately almost despised. Ah well.
jlh: Chibi of me in an apron with a cocktail glass and shaker. (NA S&D)
Right. Well. That's done then.

I don't think there is anyone reading this who doesn't know that I am (was?) involved in [livejournal.com profile] nocturne_alley. Hell, there's been a big fat clue for you sitting on my LJ for a few months now. If you don't want to know anything more than that, don't go into the cut. If you never read NA or never liked it, please, allow me my sentimentality over something that I worked very hard on, am so very proud of, and am mourning now. If you do click below, please don't spread things around as there are those that don't want to know "who's who". Thanks!

A time of innocence, a time of confidences )

Long ago it must be, I have a photograph.

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ely709 for making me this excellent icon from [livejournal.com profile] lovedoesthat, whose [livejournal.com profile] _hdcomic everyone should go read.

Preserve your memories. They're all that's left you.

Jeez, offline for all of 20 hours and the universe explodes. I mean, honestly. I suppose this is a time to respond to a few things that have been swirling around lately.

The "I hate slash" issue
For what it's worth, I absolutely think that the statement "I hate slash" is homophobic. Ivy said it much better than I ever could, so go there for the best argument for this point of view.

However, I don't agree with [livejournal.com profile] vanityfair that people can attack slash but not het. If I had a dollar for every time some slasher said "ew, hate het" with no comment, I would be a wealthy woman. Actually, I think that what Ivy says about slash is equally true about het. The only difference is that "I hate slash" is (somewhat) sanctioned by the dominant culture, whereas "I hate het" is sanctioned by a specific subculture. But then again, I'm also someone who thinks that the hatred-back of a subculture for the dominant culture really doesn't help anything but just gives the dominant culture more concrete reasons to hate the subculture.

Also, please note that I write both slash and het, usually in the same story. This generally means that both sides of the fandom hate and/or ignore me, but I'm getting used to it.

The NA issue
First, and I know this is a bit late on my part, I'm really really proud to be a part of NA and really honored that I was asked to join. These past nine months have been an amazing experience.

It came to my attention after that post of mine that the real issue wasn't the LJ squeeing but the YM statuses. So I'll say this: I have a real job. An actual, salaried, high-stress, professional, 9-whenever I can get out of there job. As a general rule, I have no business being online during my workday, and I used to be on invisible becasue I really can't chat—or at least, only sporadically or at lunch or when I'm waiting for someone to do something. But I also know that I don't get home most nights until 7 or 7:30 EDT, which is late for a lot of Euro-dwellers who might want to ask me a question for NA. Hence the status "working for the man, but here for NA". I would have thought that "working for the man" would give everyone a tip that I am actually at work and therefore can't really chat, but I guess not. The only time that I put up an "NA only" status when I'm at home is when I'm actually IN an NA chat.

Also, I can't count the number of you that have had statuses that said, "RS Only" or "FA Only" or the equivalent of "I'm busy doing x, you can buzz me but I'm not up for a chat". So I don't see how "NA Only" is seriously different than that. I'm sorry this means that I can't really chat with my UK friends during the week—but then, I never really have been able to, so I don't think this is really a change.

The smut issue
It has also come to my attention that there are people who cannot get into RS because they cannot get the password to work, and once there can't find things. I have to say, I have had that problem myself. Someone links directly to the story and RS keeps sending you to the homepage, and usually the original link didn't tell you who the author was so you can find it yourself. This is irritating.

So. I'm going to continue to send my NC17 to RS, but if you're having trouble seeing stuff there, here are some options:
1—Join Pierian Springs, the yahoo group for the Muses ([livejournal.com profile] ely709, [livejournal.com profile] evil_erato, [livejournal.com profile] thalialuna, [livejournal.com profile] fiatincantatum, [livejournal.com profile] bluebyrd, [livejournal.com profile] ladylisse, [livejournal.com profile] misscora, [livejournal.com profile] tessfawcett, and me). Everything I have finished and posted is there, and I'll make sure I've updated my folder by the end of the weekend.
2—I've been on a bit of a smut rampage, writing up stories for all my pairings plus that wifeswapping fic. So I've decided to post those stories here as well, roughly once a week or so. Smut til Book 5!

Anything I've missed?
jlh: Seamus and Dean, in uniform, hugging and looking at the viewer (SD Clio)
I am so angry right now, I am not even sure which end is up.

There was a bit of a to-do elsewhere, having to do with NA, the specifics of which I will not relate here. But in the course of that to-do, the instigator said:

" . . . you have 200 people watching NA all because of [livejournal.com profile] potterstinks."

I want to say for the record that I started watching NA not because of the Draco player. I started watching because of Seamus and Dean. This was long before I had any involvement whatsoever in NA; I was just watching. I continue to watch because of the interactions between lots of the minor characters--Susan and Justin, Lavender and Neville, all the pouty Ravenclaws--the list goes on and on and on. As a matter of fact, anyone who doesn't think that this from [livejournal.com profile] jadedsirius and this from [livejournal.com profile] lupercus don't rival any of the brilliant things [livejournal.com profile] potterstinks has posted has their head so far up their own H/Dcentric ass that they can't even walk.

All apologies before I begin to my friend and fellow OTP'er [livejournal.com profile] vanityfair but this illustrates once again WHY I don't read much H/D and can't be arsed to get too involved in that side of the fandom. One trick pony, anyone? Are there no other characters for you people? Sure, there are shippers in the fandom, but at least they don't think that their wee corner is the entire fandom (or at least its burning molten core of coolness). I mean, take a poll of those folks over in SBRL-land (many of whom don't even like Harry, by the way) and they won't be under any such impression. They are happily sitting in their own little sector, but they know it's a little sector.

[livejournal.com profile] potterstinks is a great player--of that there is no doubt. But what keeps the machine that is NA rolling along is ALL the players and their interactions. It's why I started watching, it's why I was honored when asked to join, and it's why I remain as a player and a watcher. The books may center around Harry but NA doesn't--not exclusively--and that is exactly what makes it so great and so much fun to be a part of. Those of you who think that this is the "Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy making sweet, sweet love" fandom can leave by that door over there--or at the very least defriend me now. If H/D is all you want to read, write and recommend, that's great. Have at it. But if it's all you think is worthwhile in the fandom, then you are no better than the Sugar Quill.

And yes, I mean that as an insult.

I haven't posted for a while, so this is going to be one of those all-over-the-place posts. First, and most importantly, Chapter 5 of EWFS is up. It's really not bad. I'm happy with it, anyway.

Some non-HP:

One thing I love about this country is that no matter what you've done, no one can make you talk. It's in the Bill of Rights: "No person . . . shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself . . . ." Hence, the scene of endless executives coming before Congressional committees, making self-serving speeches, then taking the 5th. I am reminded of my true ambition in life: to be an unindicted co-conspirator. Hey, if RMN could do it, so can I!

What happened at the All Star Game? This can't be a good omen, either for my Fenway boys or for the looming strike. Damn that anti-trust exemption!

That said, on to the HP:

Why, exactly, does a minor slash ship make me so happy, and why do I feel so self-conscious about it? Why did [livejournal.com profile] theirishwonder's reply to [livejournal.com profile] deanthomas have me dancing in my apartment? We are definitely the little ship that could. We're sweet, but we're not annoying. We're like black--we go with everything. Speaking of which, the beloved Miss Cora is back in the US, which means not only 3-4 more chapters of Friendship, Loyalty & Love but also a possible sequel to Chocolate Sin. I have the beta in my hot little hands. Jealous? You should be.

As for me, I have to clean out the small stuff:
1. Finish up that Percy/Oliver--thank you, darling Ely! She even titled it! This thing is bound for AT. Promise.
2. Get that present for [livejournal.com profile] johnwalton in shape to go to a beta.
3. Write that Swing Time fic in the EWFS universe that's been floating around my head.
4. Revise "I'm Weary." Usually, my writing pattern is: write, revise, set aside, revise, send to alphas, revise, send to betas, revise, show to alphas again, tweak, post. This is why I'm always working on several chapters at once. I'm Weary was: write, revise, send to Femme who did a speedy beta and shouted at me to post it, post on SBRL. However, now it appears that the thing is going to live in [livejournal.com profile] ballyharnon's archive. Which is fine, but it's not my best work, and I'd rather it were better. (There's a scene change in the middle where you can hear the gears grinding.)
5. Never mind doing some serious remedial work on ch 7 of EWFS.

Many apologies to everyone I owe reviews: [livejournal.com profile] ballyharnon, [livejournal.com profile] vanityfair, [livejournal.com profile] raymarie. I'm also 46 Chapter Owls behind. I am never going to be a Niffler. le sigh.
jlh: Chibi of me in an apron with a cocktail glass and shaker. (Cary Grant)
1. A very nice out of town trip. So good to get away from everything that was upsetting me. I hope I have more perspective now on everything.

2. The sequel to EWFS continues to float around my head. Oddly, it would appear that with war coming in EWFS, everyone is cheerful. But with war over, everyone is angsty. Hrm.

3. [livejournal.com profile] ballyharnon. Because [livejournal.com profile] angeldemaria welcomed me home, which made my day yesterday and started this whole cheerfulness thing. Because she introduced me to [livejournal.com profile] regardingmoony. Because she just posted Chapter 6 of Of Silver to the SBRL list. Because she frolicked in my LJ during Pride and gave me a preview. Because she rocks harder than anyone in the fandom, period.

4. Just this morning: the meeting between [livejournal.com profile] deanthomas and [livejournal.com profile] theirishwonder, which you can see in Dean's LJ. Oh yeah, baby. Read it and see why Seamus/Dean is the bestest, ever. ::floats away in bliss::

5. [livejournal.com profile] alexmalfoy, who has to be the most entertaining person on the planet.

6. [livejournal.com profile] vanityfair's LUW 11, for which I am formulating a thoughtful review.

7. The CR crew: [livejournal.com profile] raymarie, [livejournal.com profile] lilito, [livejournal.com profile] syddle, [livejournal.com profile] o0oisiso0o, Katie (who isn't here yet but we're working on it) and the MIA and much-missed Ophelia. RIP CR.

8. Everyone I have met here through Aja, John and Alex. Every time a new person wanders into my LJ I feel that much more connected. And honored, frankly.

9. My twin, the evil twins, the gardener of special flowers, the wrangler of the cast of thousands, the missed and loved, and, yes, the enforcer. You know why.

Hurrah!!!!

For those of you that wondered what I actually do for The Man. I could bitch here about my minions and their inability to do their jobs without me holding their hands, but that would only make me more aggravated. So.

Anyone out there avail to do a quick beta on a cookie that I am writing as present? Actually, a present for one of you, but that person shall remain nameless for the moment. The usual S/D. My usual beta for short pieces is under the weather and under it, and I would not want to further burden her at this time. (Get well, kid!)

I have new friends! Thanks for stopping by. I am inspired to share a limerick recited to me by C____ upon his move to Brighton, MA:
There once was a young lad from Brighton
Who said to his lass, "You're a tight one!"
She said, "But your pole
Is in the wrong hole!
There's plenty of room in the right one."
The lass clearly needs to start doing those Kegel exercises.

Guess who has a smidge of inside info on [livejournal.com profile] nocturne_alley? Jealous? Of course you are.

[livejournal.com profile] bluebyrd, thanks for the instant slash.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] ballyharnon is back and yammering about Irish men with dicks the size of New Hampshire. ::sigh::
jlh: Chibi of me in an apron with a cocktail glass and shaker. (Cary Grant)
. . . was to proclaim my total undying love for [livejournal.com profile] theirishwonder, and rant some more about [livejournal.com profile] just_harry and what a prat he is. But I find that Harry is doing just miserable without my pointing out his faults, so I'll leave him to stew in his own juices. Seamus, OTOH, well--just look at the titles of his posts! His posts have the best titles! He is a poet! I am in love! (I am reminded of a moment on W&G where Will's bf said something complementary to Grace and she replied, "Ten years ago, I would have wasted so much time over you.") Dean, snap him up! He's a gem!

If anyone is listening (though I doubt it)--Clio wants a S/D icon, please.

A correction: In contrast to the previous post, [livejournal.com profile] vanityfair at no time wanted us the f*** out of her LJ, and in fact was digging the debate therein. The management regrets the error and waves hello to Aja. (Come to think of it, have you tried a food processor on slice? Could be more effective.)

Oh, dear. I'm afraid I am now obsessed with small appliances. Thanks, babe.

Off to write S/D's post-ball make-up sex scene for EWFS. Wish me luck.
jlh: Chibi of me in an apron with a cocktail glass and shaker. (Default)
You know, I'm all for the H/D slash, my crowing about S/D notwithstanding. But I am not for beards, nor for them carping at each other. Poor [livejournal.com profile] susanbones! I just hope that [livejournal.com profile] just_harry is pleased with himself. Honestly! Where is the little twerp, anyway? There's a country not heard from. I mean, at least [livejournal.com profile] theirishwonder is honest. That PVC-loving goth b***h [livejournal.com profile] darque_pansy had just better watch her back, is all I can say, because what goes around comes around. We all know she's heading for a big FALL from those platform shoes of hers.

Right, calm.

I had a chat with [livejournal.com profile] raymarie the other night about our old crowd, and I was pretty blythe about the whole "groups don't stick together" thing. Looking back on it, I don't think I conveyed enough that I am sad about it, too. I felt terrible while writing the latest GG; I'm considering asking Katie to let me off the list. I want new people to take it over. I thought about this over the weekend, and also today, when I saw [livejournal.com profile] lilito's post about dear ophelia. But, you can't go back. Ah well.

You will live in Mansion. You will drive a Black VW Beetle. You will marry Seamus Finnigan and have 1 kid.You will be a Schoolteacher in Toronto.

All things considered, not bad at all. Of course, I'm no beard.
jlh: Chibi of me in an apron with a cocktail glass and shaker. (Default)
I would just like to take a moment and gloat about [livejournal.com profile] nocturne_alley, where [livejournal.com profile] theirishwonder kissed [livejournal.com profile] deanthomas at the ball! And Dean seems pleased about it.

That's my boy! You get 'em, Finn.

oh, and [livejournal.com profile] fiatincantatum, I suggest you read [livejournal.com profile] onourbrooms's comment to Seamus; she sounds like your girl.

Ha!

I'm tired of being philosophical. Besides, self-professed "non-writer" [livejournal.com profile] eccentricfemme wrote it much better.

Also, even though I wasn't supposed to be thinking about it anymore, I figured out my problem in ch 10 and worked on it (at work) today.

So, instead, quizzes:

What Flavour Are You? I am Vanilla Flavoured.I am Vanilla Flavoured.

I am one of the most popular flavours in the world. Subtle and smooth, I go reasonably with anyone, and rarely do anything to offend. I can be expected to be blending in in society. What Flavour Are You?

Well, I do like vanilla egg creams, and vanilla steamers, and vanilla flavoured tea, and vanilla sugar. ::shrugs:: Second was:

What Flavour Are You? Mmm, I am Lemon Flavoured.Mmm, I am Lemon Flavoured.

I am bitter and twisted. Expect from me acerbic humour and sharp commentary. While I may seem nasty at first, I'm actually quite good company if I like you, so long as you don't mind a bit of cutting to the chase. What Flavour Are You?

Ooooh, I quite like that. Nice balance, these two.

You've realized that there's noway you can get through life without sitting back and laughing at it. There's lots of funny things in this world, and stupid people to make fun of, to provide endless entertainment to the many number of people that surrond you. But sometimes you should acknowledge that not everything is joke material, yeah... it sucks, but being serious at the right moments is important too. But when the tension needs breaking, we can all expect you to be the one to do it with a witty one-liner.

Probably.

Message to [livejournal.com profile] darque_pansy: what is with the PVC? Is that your fetish, or that of [livejournal.com profile] potterstinks? And can I have a picture?
