Here's the final bracket!

Look, it's our amazing bracket! )

I've edited the final four and championship brackets into those poll entries, so go check them out, and thanks so much to [community profile] ali_wildgoose for making them!!

I know to some it seems like blue won two years in a row, but remember that midnight blue only won by three votes, and bright yellow and green made it pretty far! You guys were definitely in the mood for bright colors this year! Thanks to everyone who voted and commented for making it so much fun!

I do have some ideas for next year. There might even be more interesting visuals, and maybe even no names!

But very happily we did have names this year.

Kisses! )

The manatees thank you for your time.

Has been posted here! I admit, one of the votes on the round of eight was such a squeaker that I let it go quite long. Definitely a diverse group of colors for the final four!

I think many of you know as lots of folks have voted but here is the new color wars post!

Hey look, it's the bracket for Color War: Year Two! As last year, the bracket is courtesy of your friend and mine, [community profile] ali_wildgoose.

and it's a thing of beauty! )

The polls will go up tomorrow evening, and you'll always have at least 24 hours to vote. You can even start campaigning right here in this very post!

Hey everyone, it's an annoying day here so I'm trying to turn that frown upside down and think about awesome things! Please comment with something making you happy or excited or pleased or whatever right now, however big or small!

One thing pleasing me is this new trend of photo montage art: fake romance novel covers. Here's one made for Hawaii 5-0 (Danny/Steve, natch). Too fun.

I have two Dreamwidth invite codes if anyone wants them, though I think all of you who want to be at DW are already there. That said, I love it when people post on DW because I can expand their cut tags without leaving my reading page, which is an awesome feature. Also the post length is longer so I don't have to divvy up my fics as much.

I'm really looking forward to the return of Community and White Collar next week, and Glee and Justified in February.

I'm nearly finished with the Ryan/Simon stories I wanted to get posted before the debut of the new Idol (s3, s4 rewrite, some smut). I don't think the season 9 Crystal-centered 70's femslash AU will be done by then, though I'm working on it as we speak. Perhaps I will write that today at work!

I had a really, really shitty day yesterday and today is not turning out all that much better. So I thought I should sit down and write out stuff that is making me happy or has made me happy over the past few weeks so that I remember that there are happy things. (I don't really like ranting as it never makes me feel better--as evidenced the other day.) And I'm going to break all these things down into tiny components, because a longer list will make me happier.

  • Star Trek and RPF big bangs. I have read so many great fics! As soon as the rpf bb is over I'll post the stuff I read and enjoyed, as I know there's at least one more Idol fic coming that I want to read. And the lead up to the big bangs, when everyone was frantically writing, there was such a spirit of comaraderie. I was so eagerly anticipating so many fics that I'd heard of.
  • Reading stuff I don't usually read. Partly, I read some Cookleta that didn't freak me out and now I'm interested in reading more; I think in an AU where the writer isn't playing up the brotherly aspects I like it just fine. But mostly, to be honest, this has been sports fic from the rpf big bang. I have no idea what is going on in these stories, and yet they were fairly enjoyable. I had to like, google people to see what they looked like.
  • My iphone. Between the downloadable epub files on AO3 that I can read in Stanza, and the fics posted on LJ/DW that I can read offline on Instapaper, I was able to read most of the big bangs on my phone on my 35 minute subway trip to work. Brilliant. I'm a fast reader--have to be when you're studying the humanities--and so I could usually get through a BB fic every other day, or even every day.
  • The BB mixes. I have a huge haul of new music now! So many of the mixes were awesome!
  • My fellow Rymon shippers. The way everyone came together about Yuletide and getting the ship back in was really awesome. I love being in a little ship; you guys are all so great and so passionate and so enthusiastic.
  • My fellow Kirk/McCoy shippers. I love how non-wanky everything is, that I don't have to hear the apparently rampant anti-Uhura bullshit that floats around. Not that there aren't issues (I do wish Jocelyn weren't a villain so often) but it's nice not to feel like we're either (1) in a ship war or (2) a tiny ship no one wants in the fandom. I don't think I've ever had this experience. Being in a big, but non-wanky, ship is pretty great too.
  • The reception to my BB fics. I had forgotten, when in larger Idol fandom, what it was like to be in a fandom that actually really liked most of the cast, that actually loved ensemble fics and rewarded them rather than being narrowly focused on one ship. So many people said they liked the other characters, the female characters like Carol and Joanna, and that was such an amazing surprise.
  • Chromatic Yuletide 2010. Nearly all of my offerings, and half my requests, are for characters of color. Also my offerings/request are mostly ladies.
  • The weather. I love fall.

That might be enough for this moment. What's making you happy today? This week? This month?
jlh: Chibi of me in an apron with a cocktail glass and shaker. (cyndi in the city)
So this week has been pretty tough, in a very isolating way, with the lovely response to my RPF BB the main bright spot (as well as a few other things). And rather than despair into my work (paid, that is), and despite it being Friday when there's sort of no one around, I thought I would put up an open post and see what I caught!

What are you all up to?

I'm going to a tumblr meet up on Saturday, and perhaps out with some people later tonight, and last night after reading a secret about Yusuf and then some meta about him I came up with a whole Inception Vegas AU that I might write after I've finished some other things. Hopefully the fandom will not be dead by the time I get to writing that, because it's Yusuf/Ariadne, not Arthur/Eames.
jlh: Fiona Apple smiling (music: Fiona Apple smiling)
I've been so worried lately, and thanks to all of you for being nice about it. Let's talk about stuff that's making me happy!

  • New Nigella on my TV! She's seriously my anxiety cure, you don't even know. And she likes rosé, which I do too. (See below.)
  • Saw Red yesterday noontime at a $6 matinee. It was really fun! Bruce and Karl and Helen and Morgan and Malkovich were all adorbs, as was Brian Cox's old Russian.
  • Then I went on a very NYC shopping spree around Union Square, picking up some staples at Trader Joe's (they have frozen pork buns now!), bread and jam at the green market, rosé at the wine store, and some spicy beef broth noodle to go at Republic.
  • The jam deserves its own bullet. I adore the jam from Beth's, which you can also order online. I picked up Raspybarb (raspberry rhubarb) which is the flavor of my favorite pie. I also got some rhubarb chutney (so good on meatloaf) and some garlic rosemary jam (excellent on toast topped with scrambled egg). I ate bread and jam for dinner!
  • [livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang and [livejournal.com profile] rpf_big_bang are posting! So many great stories already!
  • Yuletide! I'm pondering what fandoms to nominate other than WKRP. Undercovers and Hawaii 5-0 at the very least, and Community as well because that fandom isn't that big. I'm thinking about nominating the Green Hornet movie even though it's not out until next month because hey, Kato fic.
  • It's fall, and it's properly chilly and breezy and the leaves are falling and when it's not raining the sky is the most gorgeous blue. And the cat has gone back to demanding a permanent position on my lap.

I've got chicken stock in the stockpot, I cleaned the bathroom, and I'm reviewing fic. And then I'll do a last read over my rpf bb fic which goes up tomorrow! Eee!

I'm getting into doing this once a month. The [livejournal.com profile] st_respect ship battle is over ([livejournal.com profile] team_jones came in 3rd!), so I might take a minibreak from the Enterprise gang and write some omg Harry Potter for a week or so.

Like seemingly half my flist, I've signed up for [livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang and [livejournal.com profile] rpf_big_bang, though both for fics that were already started or in concept, so it's really bonus art/mixes for me! I'm not sure I have 3000 words about [livejournal.com profile] ryanandesposito in me, so I'll just be writing reviews for that challenge.

Written:
  • Rymon season 1: All Over Me
  • Two larger comment fics from [livejournal.com profile] team_jones, No One Will Be Watching Us and The Sun Rising, plus several smaller ones
  • A final [livejournal.com profile] team_jones comment fic is in beta right now!

To be written/finished:
  • D/G schooltime fic
  • Star Trek Hollywood AU, which I'm writing for [livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang
  • Rymon season 9, which I'm writing for [livejournal.com profile] rpf_big_bang
  • Rymon season 3 (and yes, [personal profile] ignaz, I'm relying on your current recaps!)
  • Rymon season 4 rewrite/expand/retitle "Who's Afraid of Janis Ian"
  • AI9 70's Laurel Canyon femslash AU, part of my [community profile] tenwomen challenge
  • AI5 Kat/Elliott 50's Hollywood AU (this is a maybe)
  • Chapel/Rand Radcliffe AU, part of my [community profile] tenwomen challenge
  • EWFS sequel (this week I finished ch 5 finally!), which will lead into
  • some Pansy/Parvati fics as part of my [community profile] tenwomen challenge
  • Remaining S/D fics for [livejournal.com profile] fanfic100 claim

Because you know you need to watch Elton, Bruce, Sting, Gaga, Debbie Harry and Shirley Bassey sing "Don't Stop Believin'" at Carnegie Hall accompanied by a dance line of nearly naked men:

Lately, I've been feeling like everyone hates the shows I love. But you know, looking back, it was a damn good week of TV, and not just because all my shows (that are running now) had a new episode this week.

HIMYM, DwtS, Castle, Idol, Glee, Justified, Top Chef Masters, Community, Project Runway )

So I've been feeling very ready to get on with things, suddenly, and I have found that when one is in for a lifelong struggle with depression one should take advantage of those energetic moments when they come. I've accomplished things, though of course I feel that they are not the Big Important Things I should be doing. But it's better than not accomplishing anything.

In the small things is changing my LJ layout to something a little open and airy and summery. Pretty blue on white, very breezy, and it's an Expressive rather than Minimalist style, which might make me feel less self-conscious about making posts with no comments. The Expressive style has a little graphic with the number of comments that only shows up when you have them—no comments, no leaf for you!

I also took stock and got rid of piles of icons, mostly old HP ones and a few idol ones, and replaced them with a million Star Trek ones, yes, all by one icon maker. Sometimes you find someone who shares your ship and your aesthetic and you upload, er, 30 of their icons. This happens!

And now I'm off to cook—friends over for dinner, so I need to get the sauce on and the tiramisu soaking.

Anyone interested in beta'ing a 2700-word fluff-tastic Kirk/McCoy fic that started out in some comments this weekend? Let me know!

Okay, to cheer myself up, the WIP meme!

Written:
  • FINISHED my [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti fic for [livejournal.com profile] pinkfinity: (John Hughes: Duckie/Cameron)
  • FINISHED my parts of a group fic for the next [livejournal.com profile] st_respect prompt
  • Need to post 2 large and several small comment fics done for [livejournal.com profile] team_jones at one time or another. One of the large ones needs to be beta'd.

To be written/finished:
  • Star Trek Hollywood AU
  • Chapel/Rand Radcliffe AU
  • Kirk and Spock's Great Adventure in Helsinki (aka, Chekov's defection)
  • Rymon season 1—DRAFTED TODAY!
  • Rymon season 3
  • Rewrite/expand "Who's Afraid of Janis Ian"; likely re-title to churlishly remove reference to Jacob
  • Rymon season 9
  • AI9 70's Laurel Canyon femslash AU
  • AI5 50's AU, Hollywood-ish
  • D/G schooltime fic
  • EWFS sequel
  • Remaining S/D fics for fanfic100 claim

LOVE MEME

because there was like, some lameness in ST fandom last week.

If you have a comment definitely link me!

Isn't it cool? I found it here, via tumblr.

I started the color war to give everyone a little happy because the fannish alternative bracket things are often so divisive and disappointing for many. I thought having a bracket over something that people cared about but that didn't have a higher significance would be fun. Thanks to all of YOU, it was! So thanks to everyone who voted!

My replies to the comments were delayed because I noticed a trend really early on and didn't want to tip my hand about it. But now that it's over, I'm ready to reveal all!

The secret is: You guys really like the color blue.

Details, with VISUAL AIDS )

My apologies to all of you who don't really like blue, or like yellow and orange, or like warm colors generally. I think, and this is just a theory, that we were mostly voting for colors that we can wear. But yeah, it's all about cool colors, and really not about warm ones.

So here, for your printing and admiring pleasure, the FINAL BRACKET (click to enlarge), and thanks again to [community profile] ali_wildgoose for making all of the brackets!

I'm working on a wrap-up post but in the meantime I thought I'd share the last three brackets with you.

Also if you're interested in other alternative brackets, Tyler Green's blog Modern Art Notes is hosting The Greatest Living American Abstract Painter Tourney-ish. Relevant to the crayon brackets for me because while you all were drawing starry skies I was all abstract, all nonrepresentational, all the time. I was really into geometric shapes of color, and I still am, actually.

Anyway, the brackets! Click to enlarge:

Thanks again, [community profile] ali_wildgoose! I'll put the final bracket in the final post.
