I have corrupted [livejournal.com profile] ali_wildgoose, who watched with me and demanded that I play Melinda's song again.

  1. Blake, "Mack the Knife." How unsurprised I am that he chose this song? Thing is, the original song is a dirge—in "Threepenny Opera" it's really quite slow. Bobby Darin could swing it, but then again, he was Bobby fucking Darin. [insert your own Blake-you're-no-Darin statement here]
  2. Phil, "Night and Day." Wow, Phil, that was some boring shit. By the end of the show I couldn't even remember what he had sung.
  3. Melinda, "I Got Rhythm." I love that she sang the verse! What a fantastic arrangement, and what a pro she is. Excellent. (Oh, and Simon, enough with your hatred of Broadway, for reals.)
  4. Chris, "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." You know, he was actually pretty good. The outfit was ridiculous though.
  5. Jordin, "On a Clear Day." Tony loves her and so do we. Could she have looked more adorable? Again, Simon, whatever with you, because she sounded excellent.
  6. Gina, "Smile." God she's so Hot Topic. I thought she was better than Simon did, and hopefully she isn't going anyplace.
  7. Sanjaya, "Cheek to Cheek." Smart to choose such a lightweight song. He is mysteriously dressed like Tony Manero from Saturday Night Fever. All the grandmothers will vote for him. But at least he had the good sense to dance with Paula.
  8. Haley, "Ain't Misbehavin'." What the hell is she wearing? Does she think she's singing on Lawrence Welk or something? That arrangement was terrible, she kept kicking her leg in a bizarre way, and she never figured out what the song was about.
  9. Lakisha, "Stormy Weather." Kiki also took some weird trip back to the late 60s with that dress. The start was a little rocky but she found her way through that arrangement to a pretty good finish.

I was so bored with tonight. I don't even know what to say about it.
Seems like every performance was erased from my mind, except Melinda's.
She was awesome, of course, and that song always reminds me of Judy which is a plus.

I have no idea who's going home. Nothing will really make an impact with me tomorrow night. Though, if I had to guess, it'd be Phil.

It was overall fairly boring, but I think that's because they are a fairly boring group of finalists this year, and with the theme even Sanjaya was subdued, plus Simon was all grouchy so there wasn't even any kicky fun. And Tony is so old school that he didn't even have anything bitchy to say.

Everyone seems to be guessing Phil.

We had a storm, so I couldn't log on most of last night and today...

Anyway, thank you! Thank you both! I thought it was just us bored out of our freakin' minds!!

I'm also glad someone else noticed that Simon was like "God, I want to be anywhere but here. Hate you all. Hate your dogs." What was up with him!?

And this was the second week in a row that he was putting on his watch as the show began. That makes me think dirty thoughts about dressing rooms.

I have never seen AI before this season, and I somehow fell into watching a few minutes here and there and now we are sort of sucked in. Phil looks like a creepy stalker to me. He hardly ever blinks. I think he is an alien. I can't look at him.

You are dead on. Haley looked like she should be on Welk!

Phil is really creepy, and then his personality is completely not, so the whole thing is really very odd. He needs to wear a hat, like, always.

You know in Clueless when the gay guy comes to pick up Cher and he's wearing a porkpie hat and her father says just because Dean Martin is dead doesn't mean there's an opening in the Rat Pack? That's what Chris's outfit reminded me of. I mean, a vest AND hanging suspenders AND the hat AND with jeans and sneaks? Come on.

I was out but I saw Gina got the axe. Wow, I was really hoping it would be Phil or maybe Haley. She is like agar. I'm sure she would make a good host for bacteria.

I love this songbook and thought there were a lot of good performances tonight, along the horror of Sanjaya's grease helmet. Alas, I also felt Tony was pretty useless as a mentor. Telling Chris to memorize the words? Yeah, I think he knew that one already.

I think Tony is such a pro that he really didn't have much to say to anyone who wasn't really prepared. Some of the performances really were quite good but so many were also really boring. I wasn't as entertained as I wanted to be. I think too many went the big ballad route because they didn't trust themselves to swing.

That said, thank god Sligh is gone. Watching him trying to swing would have been truly painful.

Haley entertained me, although she had no idea what the song was about--ever try, oh, reading the lyrics, Haley?--and it was kind of sad to watch her face fall when the judges started. She did put on a great show.
