Am still trying to do that "talking about my RL activities" thing. Still feels like ostentatious name-dropping but fuck it, these people are my friends.

Went with [livejournal.com profile] epicyclical to see [livejournal.com profile] blackholly do a reading last night in a VERY crowded, very hot bar. She rocked, as usual. Went to dinner afterward with [livejournal.com profile] ali_wildgoose, [livejournal.com profile] bhanesidhe and [livejournal.com profile] uberlibra. Then the party-hopping [livejournal.com profile] uberlibra headed across town to join [livejournal.com profile] gehenna1and [livejournal.com profile] spirespike and others ([livejournal.com profile] uberlibra, I have your brolly and will bring it to you tomorrow evening). A somewhat—chastened isn't the word but something like it—[livejournal.com profile] epicyclical met us later and we all went home.

Everyone is being really good about spoilers, but I don't even want to hear how you feel about what you know. [livejournal.com profile] nmalfoy very innocently said something not even spoilery to me last night and now my mind is convinced of something and ugh. I hope it doesn't mean I have to hop offline before 7pm tomorrow because dude. I am very glad, though, that JKR is suing the Daily News' arse; go her! On the other hand, I am vibrating--VIBRATING. [livejournal.com profile] ali_wildgoose would be so happy to see it. (Speaking of Ali, she updated her comic so go read it.)

If you haven't read that [livejournal.com profile] iscaris ficlet, or [livejournal.com profile] petulans's review thereof, go now and do so. There really IS this odd feeling of hello/goodbye. It's as though we've been on a spaceship on a very long journey from GoF to OotP, and as [livejournal.com profile] iscaris said, we've been trapped on this ship so long that we know every single nook and cranny by heart. But it's what we KNOW; there are babies who were born on the ship and don't even know what a planet is like. And now, we're coming in through the outer atmosphere, and pretty soon we'll have to maintain radio silence during re-entry. And who knows what we'll find in this new place?

Speaking of parting shots of sorts, Swingers is up at Restricted Section! Hurrah! Thanks so much for all the feedback; I'll likely be replying to lots of folks later today. You all have definitely made me feel that at the very least, thoughtful yet explicit smut that owes more to actual porn and classic erotica than to modern romance or erotic novels is actually welcome; I really wasn't sure about that. But here's a general note:

First, again, you wouldn't be reading this fic if not for [livejournal.com profile] vanityfair. I kept thinking I'd abandon it and she would help me through a sticky bit so you all have her to thank. I really can't stress that enough.

Of course there are allusions to a bunch of other things, including PoU and DD and LIAB, but also to Aspen's DaisyChain!Draco, though perhaps not for the reasons you might think. Hopefully, having read all this, you can see why I am such an enormous fan of that fic—smut is more interesting, and hotter, when the kink comes from some realistic, psychological place, and isn't just sort of dumped in for something to do. And then there is the overarching allusion to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, which was suggested by [livejournal.com profile] nmalfoy, after which I struggled to make the ending entirely different than that play. I think I succeeded, something that [livejournal.com profile] blackholly will be pleased about, no doubt. Never mind that even in a story that doesn't include them, Seamus and Dean are always there in the background someplace.

So, the dances, as [livejournal.com profile] slightlights asked. (And damn, chica, those reviews! You will have me taking myself seriously, and then where will we be?) Mostly, they are puns. Bop is an allusion to masturbation; Lindy Hop, of course, to Harry and Draco being seekers and flyers generally; Boogie Woogie is sort of a youthful, teenage dance (I would have put Gin in bobby socks and saddle shoes); Hustle should be fairly self-explanatory; Jitterbug is a very couple-y dance—and the chapter that suggested the theme, because the "pearl necklace" made me think of "A String of Pearls" and away we go; and Jive, also, should be fairly evident. An original idea for the title was "Harry James Swings!" but we didn't think anyone would recognize the reference, and anyway, Harry James is a dick.

Wow, what a great last experience before new canon!

Swingers is a very, very good read. So good in fact, I think I've read it three times already. (Hubby's been working late...what can I say...)
