jlh: seamus and dean snuggling in bed (SD chibi)

It's cinco de mayo! But I am not drunk on tequila. Something wrong here. Though, for reasons I won't go into, I did have the day off, randomly. Spent it writing, and beta-ing for [livejournal.com profile] misscora. Got so much done, including an entire draft of a new shortfic.

Now, a year ago this week, I was in London for the first time. And actually, for the Saturday of the Bank Holiday weekend, we drove down to Brighton. Which is how I came to be walking on the pier, on the same day as [livejournal.com profile] alexmalfoy. But alas, we did not know each other then--just a coincidence.

All of which is to say, Happy Birthday, my dear Sasha. One present is in the mail, and one is here.

Another event of one year ago today: The prologue of EWFS went up on FA. I can't believe that was a year ago--it seems like ages ago, and it seems like yesterday.

Ah, the crushes. You will see a theme.

Lord Peter Wimsey, but not for the same reasons as CC. I fell in love with Lord Peter falling in love with Harriet Vane. It was eventually requited, by the way. Oh, the joy of smart people in love.

Gilbert Blythe, because he said that being smart is better than being pretty. Because he was hotheaded and never let Anne get away with anything--she could so easily have wound up with someone who worshipped her from afar and didn't quite understand her and thought she was sweet if a bit daft. But no, she got a doctor who called her Anne-girl. *swoons*

Mr Darcy, for all those reasons everyone else has given.

Nick Carroway from The Great Gatsby. I can't really explain this. There is something about the way he can see what a disaster it all will become, but assumes that Gatsby sees it, too, until it is far too late. And the way he avoids the swirl around Daisy. And his really odd relationship with Jordan. Of course I later saw the film and transferred this crush onto Sam Waterston. Mmmm.

Calvin from A Wrinkle in Time (and thanks, Cora, for reminding me). Because he's just so damn stalwart and level-headed.

But really, except for Nick Carroway, the thing all these boys have in common, and likely the reason I fell for them in the first place: They liked the smart girls. They wanted an intelligent, challenging woman for their partner. That's why, unlike CC, I like Peter most when his love is requited--in Gaudy Night and Busman's Honeymoon. It's why in film, I loved Nick and Nora Charles, and The Philadelphia Story (though not just for Tracy and Dext but also for Liz and Mike), and most of all His Girl Friday. I mean, I had a crush on Cary Grant when I was NINE.
