the man from hollywood
Apr. 14th, 2009 11:16 pmI do NOT like that we don't get to hear Simon talk about all the singers. Why have four judges if we can't hear from each of them? What is wrong with these producers? Nigel, where are you?
OMG Quentin gave me everything I needed, but um, what was with the Crispin Glover haircut? I'm disappointed that so many of them sang crappy rock ballads that I really hate, but I should have known that this would happen. But seriously, would it have killed them to sing even something from a cheesy 80s movie instead of a cheesy 90s movie? And no, Endless Love doesn't count. I'm talking more, "We Don't Need Another Hero" or "Heaven Helps the Man" or hell, even "Maniac".
[Poll #1383831]
I voted for Kris and Allison, like, a LOT.

- Allison, "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing." She was having a lot of trouble breathing, wasn't she? That said, I really don't mind the judges slightly overpraised her, because she was first in the lineup and she doesn't have a fanbase.
- Anoop, "Everything I Do I Do for You." I hate this song, so there's that, but he did quite well.
- Adam, "Born to Be Wild." Wow, that was a remarkably straight version of the song, wasn't it? I think this satisfied my wish for him to sing a metal song because he is so Rob Halford (in more ways than one of course).
- Matt, "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?" Matt makes weird choices. Randy was totally right about the bridge and screwing with the melody and all that.
- Danny, "Endless Love." I worry that all of his songs sound exactly the same. This will start to be an issue when he's singing more than one song a night.
- Kris, "Falling Slowly." See, Randy is really tiresome, because when he gets something in his head about how something should sound and he doesn't hear it, he gets annoyed. Kara was right, and thank god for her.
- Lil, "The Rose." This is the kind of thing she should have been doing since the beginning, though she was kind of off key for the whole thing. I didn't see her talk back to Simon because the DVR cut off (again) but I don't really care what she said, to be honest.

[EDIT: Saw this in the ew.com Behind the Scenes report and thought of you:
These women were so deeply intriguing that I almost missed the moment during QT's intro package when Simon beckoned Ryan over, Ryan placed his hand firmly on Simon's thigh, and Simon began talking into Ryan's ear, in the way that he physically placed his lips on Ryan's ear.

Date: 2009-04-15 01:11 pm (UTC)# Anoop, "Everything I Do I Do for You." I hate this song, so there's that, but he did quite well.
ditto. also, see below.
# Adam, "Born to Be Wild." Wow, that was a remarkably straight version of the song, wasn't it? I think this satisfied my wish for him to sing a metal song because he is so Rob Halford (in more ways than one of course).
hee. i thought simon was right about rocky horror, but that wasn't a bad thing. there is a sense in which he reminds me of elliott and melinda in that whether i like a certain song choice or performance more or less the actual singing never fails to astound me. his range, it is amazing.
# Matt, "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?" Matt makes weird choices. Randy was totally right about the bridge and screwing with the melody and all that.
hate this song too, but yeah, it was weird. randy had it exactly right about how you have to be spot-on when you do that. i still like him, though, and would rather lose lil and keep him one more week.
# Danny, "Endless Love." I worry that all of his songs sound exactly the same. This will start to be an issue when he's singing more than one song a night.
yeah. i did have to laugh at simon's comment because this was the song they eviscerated sligh for messing with. also, as my appreciation of anoop grows, my appreciation of danny dwindles- they're equally good technically, danny may even be better, but the choices he makes, his phrasing, his runs, all get in between me and the song and i'm never drawn in. i noticed it especially this week because i have sentimental love for this song and none at all for anoop's, yet far preferred the latter.
# Kris, "Falling Slowly." See, Randy is really tiresome, because when he gets something in his head about how something should sound and he doesn't hear it, he gets annoyed. Kara was right, and thank god for her.
so much word. he really set himself apart with this song choice and this performance and this was the moment I really missed hearing from simon, because i think (hope) he would have pointed out that it was contemporary. "not old-fashioned."
# Lil, "The Rose." This is the kind of thing she should have been doing since the beginning, though she was kind of off key for the whole thing. I didn't see her talk back to Simon because the DVR cut off (again) but I don't really care what she said, to be honest.
i do think the choice was potentially excellent but yeah, she was off key, and simon's right, she's been consistently and weirdly disappointing. time for her to go.

Date: 2009-04-15 06:19 pm (UTC)I basically have hate for every song sung last night except Falling Slowly. Well, I have contempt for the two Bryan Adams and the Aerosmith; I never liked Endless Love; The Rose reminds me of junior high talent shows; and Born to Be Wild is so over, especially after Alan Thicke sang it while sitting atop a motorcycle on an episode of Growing Pains. So I guess that's hate, yeah.
Falling Slowly was the shizzle, though, and I yearn to know what Simon thought of it.
Oh, and note the offscreen Rymon in Ren's comment thanks to the ew.com on the scene report. ♥

Date: 2009-04-15 09:16 pm (UTC)'m with you on the bryan adams (there is certainly stuff by him i am fond of, but only early on) and "born to be wild," which is one of that whole list of rockist classics that just bore me. i can appreciate that they're seminal and indelible and all that but i will always click past "smoke on the water" in favor of "i want it that way." the aerosmith...i can go for that, depending on my mood, but because of its "i want it that way" qualities rather than its "smoke on the water" qualities- i feel jacob would understand this, or at least what i mean by it. "the rose" was certainly a big spring concert solo- i'm surprised i left it out of the fic- and was one of my junior-high cry songs, and i'm completely meh on it. this winter the oddest thing happened, btw- one of the soloists sang it at mass after communion. it was funny because the pianist started playing and i thought jeez, these modern catholic songs are bad but they're not usually THIS derivative, and then she started singing. i suppose i can see how it could work metaphorically as a religious song but i was taken aback.

Date: 2009-04-15 09:23 pm (UTC)What's interesting to me moving forward is where the votes will go. Would the Anoop people vote for Danny? Certainly not all the Kris people will vote for Danny; the younger ones would drift toward Adam. Where on earth will the Lil people go?

Date: 2009-04-15 09:33 pm (UTC)I love 80s Bryan Adams. I have a soft spot in my heart for "Heaven" (such a perfect prom song), and god, all that Cuts Like a Knife-Reckless period—not nearly enough people sing "Run to You", and I'm still sad that Cook never did. But the 90s movie stuff, ugh. That said, I don't think the 90s movie stuff could ever please me; I hate hate hate rock love themes from vaguely actiony movies. The only one I can even think of that I sort of like is "It's Probably Me" by Sting from one of the Lethal Weapon movies and that's about the love that dare not speak its name between Mel and Danny anyway, and is also moody and atmospheric rather than bombastic and annoying.
But then, I still haven't met a Diane Warren song I like.
I want it that way reminds me of Karaoke. very very popular there.
Modern Catholic songs are bad, aren't they?

Date: 2009-04-15 05:08 pm (UTC)and obviously I just voted for Anoop as my favorite out of UNC pride, and I do think he sang that song quite well, but if I were being completely objective I'd have to say that Kris was my favorite last night. That's a great song, and he sang it wonderfully.
