Music Lyrics Meme (because this one always goes over well):
1. Put your music player (ipod, mp3player, winamp, etc) on shuffle.
2. Write down the first song lyric of each song that comes up (skip over songs where the title is in the first line)
3. Post the lyrics so that your friends (who are also probably procrastinating) can guess the song titles.

Seriously I'm probably the only person throughout all of LiveJournal who has every single Sam Phillips song memorized. Especially amazing considering that is her lamest album... Flaaaaaame, why do I come so cloooose to you...

Oh that reminds me:

Maybe I will come to NYC for whatever show she does there?

The Turning is lamer. Besides, "Holding on to the Earth" was the big single, the song a non-fan might recognize from alternative radio at the time—I was surprised it was the one that came up on the shuffle.

Dude, that would be PERFECT. Perfectly AWESOME!

Um no way jose. The turning has: River of love, Libera Me (!!!), Carry You, AND God is watching you - all of which still hold up I think.

Also, when you look at it from the perspective that she owed her Christian label one more album and she gave them THAT - that beautiful ball of uncertainty and questioning and grey spirituality that freaks the shit out of heartland Christians - "down, comes my religion like leaves on winter trees, down down, you come to me with your love on hands and knees" - put that in your christian pop machine and try to sell it assholes!!

Yeah. You touched a sensitive spot. It was a very brave album, so it holds a special place in my heart.

<3

I didn't realize that was the last album for the Christian label because I'd only heard that it was the first one after the name change. It's the one I listen to the least, but I'll circle back to it.

You know, Christian "rock" continues to disappoint me. If they wrote about the difficulties of actually living a Christian life in the secular modern world they'd get good music that more people could relate to (see, wow, tons of great mainstream rock) but no, it's all about some sort of uncomplicated, bland acceptance that has nothing to do at least with my own spiritual experiences. I mean, traditional gospel, whether country-tinged or out of the black churches, is all about life being hard. Heck, that's the selling point of Christianity in the first place!

It baffles. Using Neil, who writes plenty of songs about being a Catholic.

It's interesting actually. The Turning was released as the last Leslie Phillips album. She loved it (he first project with T-Bone Burnett I think) but the record company hated it, and it was ill promoted and sold poorly.

Indescribable Wow was the first under the name Sam, but then after the limited success of Cruel Intentions and Martinis and Bikinis she was able to go back and buy the rights to The Turning and re-released it as a Sam album, kindof retro-actively making it the first.

And I couldn't agree with you more about that industry. It's a bizarre mindset, and it actually permeates all these big mainstream super-churches we have here on the west coast as well. Like thousands of people who will never ask a real question and don't want to be challenged by anything they see or hear either. Like Jesus isn't going to be able to handle it?

Sorry this strayed a little off topic :D

PS: This was kindof a kickass group of songs for a random shuffle. Are you sure you weren't shuffling your "kickass" playlist?

I went through 150 songs to get these 30, but only to get rid of all the album tracks that no one would know and stick to singles. I've done this meme before and it's no fun when it's full of obscure Blondie b-sides and Duran Duran album tracks. Oh, and I also took out repeat artists so it wouldn't be like, half Beatles.

But I didn't edit for "awesome." If a Toto single had come up I would have used it—note the Chris Richardson song. In fact, there would have been a Blake Lewis song too, but he says the title of the song at the beginning, and the rule says to skip the song. And even so, I probably should have skipped #1 and #26 because I don't think they're singles (the first I put on a mix I posted, and the second I've heard on compilations so I thought people might know it).
