First, folks are piling onto the latest [livejournal.com profile] news post here to demand an explanation from LJ, and there's a place where numbers are good, though I'm sure at this point they aren't reading many of the actual comments.

Second, go join [livejournal.com profile] fandom_counts so we can show how many of us in general are on here. Not that this is actually a fandom issue—we just got caught in the crossfire—but it's a good place to stand up and be counted just for being a fandomer in general.

Third, panicking never gets anyone anyplace. You get your shit ready, then you wait and see. That is the position of power.

Fourth, inspired by a good friend, I'll say this: I'm in a position to know these sort of things, unfortunately, and I have yet to see any kind of outrage about "predators" of our children that actually gets anywhere near the heart of the matter. It's interesting that we hear far more about the "To Catch a Predator" types when so many children are molested by people they know, especially people they're related to. Like, say, their own grandfathers. But it does make everyone feel better to stigmatize a stranger, or strangers talking about strange things, so have at it, lads.

Honestly, I have a hard time believing anyone calling themselves "Warriors for Innocence" is seriously going after Internet predators or trying to stop actual child molestation. It just sounds very political.

Word! on all counts, but especially point the fourth, about which I was just drunkenly holding forth on in a bar. I mean, what percentage of this kind of crime actually occurs in these highly publicized venues? And also, hello, if it's incest that's the trouble (as it is so often, or at least someone known to the victim) - you don't meet those people on the internet. You meet them at home, or after school or some place your parents take you or at confession or in the locker room after a game...

...and I guess I'm still drunkenly holding forth, so I'll cease and desist. But seriously, very cool.

Lady, you were my inspiration so I totally bow down to you! But yeah, that's the truth that no one wants to hear, because it's so much harder to protect against, so insidious, and so not talked about. So I suddenly feel like wow, maybe then I should start talking about it …
