One from column A, one from column B, but only Blake gets column C

I'm really irritable tonight for some reason, so this will be short. However, I want to rerun Blake performing "Baby Got Back" with Seattle native Sir Mix-a-Lot and shaking his own tail feather. That was too fucking awesome.

1. Jordin
   • "Wishing on a Star." Simon was right, and I'm not sure why he wasn't able to control the arrangement, to be honest. Another one of your light and easy favorites unfortunately.
   • "She Works Hard for the Money." What the fuck, boys? I mean, seriously, the best thing about this song in the first place was the video. I don't get why we've lost how young Jordin is, suddenly.
   • "I Who Have Nothing." Jordin ensures that she doesn't sing a single song written after she was born. Simon was right; she might love it, but she really needed at least one cut that gave us a clue of what she'd sound like on the radio tomorrow. After what, 13 weeks? I still have no idea.
   
   
2. Blake
   • "Roxanne." Paula chose well but what the fuck was going on with the mix on that song? Vocals were way back, guitar way too up front, and it totally threw me off. He performed it very well though, and his voice sounded good, but the whole thing sounded weird.
   • "This Love." So like, I've been listening to Maroon 5 all day, but not this song because I don't like it that much. That said, Blake sounded great, did his "thing", made me love him even more.
   • "When I Get You Alone." This was fucking fantastic. I voted 20 times. Even if he doesn't win, I'm getting that record when it comes out. (Also? I wish this were Robin Thicke's single instead of that boring thing he's singing now.)
   
   
3. Melinda
   • "I Believe in You and Me." God, Randy is so very tiresome, for reals. She was great but I personally find this song way too lite-fm. Pretty dress though.
   • "Nutbush City Limits." I fucking love this song; it's my favorite Tina song. I'm so pleased Nigel and other!Simon chose this for her. Of course, she sounded amazing.
   • "I'm a Woman." She was great but we've heard this, and I feel impatient.

I'm saying Blake is going home, mostly because of all the posts on the two Blake-centric LJ comms saying that they're not getting any busy signals. But I definitely *hope* he doesn't go home, because he is my favorite. So here's hoping that the "no busy signals" doesn't mean anything.

I know that most of the people who've done well in the last competitions did so because they generated the most text message votes. Because each vote is counted, no busy signals, etc. So I'm hoping Blake did that much. *crosses fingers*

Yeah, and that's part of the Conspiracy of Southerness, that AT&T/Cingular have better coverage in the south, so there are more southerners able to text, and that swings things to the southern singers (and note that all five of the winners have been from the south, which favors Melinda). That theory is a bit essentialist for me but there it is.

I wasn't sure who'd go home before tonight, but I agree with what you've said - Jordin just hasn't defined herself enough, compared to the other two, aside from "her voice is good."

Slightly irritated rant:

1. I really, really, really hate when contestants re-perform songs. It's an unimaginative cop-out that doesn't show us anything new, and it certainly isn't a challenge to sing a song that they've gotten praise for in the past. Also? BORING.

2. Okay, Randy, We. Get. It. You don't like Blake. Please to be quitting the shoving of Melinda & Jordin down our throats. I thought at least 1-2 of their songs (each) were a snooze-fest, regardless of how perfect their voices may or may not have been.

3. I don't have a three, but see how nice and balanced my list is?!

The show needs a new band. The band is TERRIBLE.

Her other two did nothing for me, but Nutbush City Limits all by itself made me a Melinda fan. WOW.

Jordin sings really well, but she has no style. No...personality? I don't know what to call it. Oomph? Something. The little montage of her three songs at the end made me think, god, I can't imagine going to a concert or listening to a record of hers and hearing that the whole time. I also completely agree that she should have been singing younger songs, and the producer's choice of song for her made me wonder if the producers are hoping for a Blake-Melinda showdown and were deliberately giving her an eh song.

I really did like Blake. I thought he did really well on the Maroon 5 song (even though it's not one of my favorites either), and I loved the clip of him with Sir Falzalot and what he did with his last song. The band made Roxanne sound like a dirge, though, and even though that's not his fault, I didn't care for it.

I think I'd prefer Blake win over Jordin and Melinda mainly because I like his unique style. Although presuming Melinda gets into the finals (and what an upset it would be if she didn't), if she does other songs like Nutbush City Limits on the last show, I will most likely change my mind.

Rymon: I've been watching NCIS lately, where head-smacking = love, so I really liked the head-smack. <3

The moment we didn't see? You talking about when they cut back to Simon after Ryan said "No. I'm completely sober." and he looked like he was doing something with his tongue? And what about that wink? Wow.

And Simon totally flirts with Paula to annoy Ryan(at least most of the time). Otherwise why would he tickle Paula's back and then immediately look up at Ryan with a shit eating grin?

And I already know I'll be skipping Joe R's recap. Yeah, Joe. It's ALL RYAN'S FAULT, that Jordin acted like a teenager and clearly believes her own press. Whatever.
