I don't have a lot to say about the red carpet, except no snarking on Ryan. He's a boo and he's trying very hard.
Now, those of you who have not visited Los Angeles might not know that the Kodak Theater . . . is in a MALL. There's like, a smoothie place just to the right of the staircase. Ah, only in LA must a landmark building include crappy retail.
8:30: I loved that opener from Errol Morris.
8:40: I can't decide how I feel about Ellen's crushed velour. Is this 1979? But her monologue is sweet and very Ellen. Though director, we didn't need the shot of JLo when she talked about growing up in the Bronx, as she cannot possibly be the only person in that room who did.
8:45: We all knew that she'd be dancing in the aisles, didn't we?
8:47: art direction What is that thing on Nicole's neck? And you KNOW she's skinny when she can make Daniel Craig look substantial. Pan's Labyrinth FTW.
8:48: scientific and technical awards Who doesn't love Maggie?
8:49: OMFG interpretive dance!!!!!!!
8:50: LOVE the Apple iPhone teaser. I wonder how they scored that killer A position in the first pod placement?Hate that stupid "all around the world men cannot cook and bring home McDonald's to the joy of their children" ad.
8:53: makeup That musical number from Will Farrell, Jack Black and John C. Reilly ruled me hard core, especially with all the perving on Helen Mirren and the declaration that Mark Wahlberg is badass. Meanwhile, another award for Pan's Labyrinth.
9:00: animated short, live action short Jaden Smith and Abigail Breslin, get it? Kids doing the shorts! hahafuckingha. I could do without the hammy Fresh Prince reaction shots though. These are the categories that fuck up your Oscar pool entry.
9:06: letters from iwo jima Thank goodness they aren't having someone come out and present the films. I guess we're going for streamlined this year.
9:08: Ellen should have checked that velvet tux against the curtain, as it clashes in this weird way.
9:10: sound effects editing LOVED the choir. Loved Steve and Greg too. First one for Letters From Iwo Jima. But I'm over their cutting off the other winners, because that is lame. Seriously, at some point they just won't let them come up on stage at all.
9:17: sound mixing Hmm, love me a man with an accent; must rent me some James McAvoy. Oh, and Jessica looks very nice. Yay Dreamgirls!
9:21: supporting actor Okay, did we need to remind everyone as Mark is getting nominated that he had a tough adolescence? I get the connection, but like, let it go. Rachel looks amazing, of course. OMG! Alan Arkin? I really thought Eddie would get it, and deserved it, but you know, Alan was also incredible.
9:26: MORE INTERPRETIVE DANCING!!!!!
9:28: The thing about all these "you do the ad" contests is that most of the people doing them are pros or aspiring types. I mean, this woman is from Sherman Oaks.
9:30: the departed Oh those accents!
9:32: Whatever with James Taylor, seriously.
9:34: Do you think that the people who did the word montage behind Melissa Etheridge were the ones who did the "Right Now" video for Van Halen?
9:37: Forget Obama, it's AL-MANIA!!!!!! Oh look, Jerry Seinfeld is in the audience. Okay, that joke didn't end how I thought it was going to, and that was cute. I love how now people are like, oh, wow, Al is kinda funny.
9:45: animated feature Yay Happy Feet! Not so yay, Cameron's dress, which I like that the top, and not so much like at the bottom.
9:47: Given that I'm having a devil of a time writing at the moment, I really didn't need this montage, so thanks a lot Ben. And usually montages are my favorite part of this entire shindig! Oh, Jack, you're such a ham.
9:50: adapted screenplay Cute little gimmick in the presentation by hottie of the moment Helen Mirren and must-have presenter Tom Hanks. First one for The Departed. That writer went very red.
9:51: "You bet, Chris! More fun!" This is why we love Tom Hanks.
10:02: costumes Completely cute bit, including Meryl's mugging. Excellent display of costumes. More poll-fucking with a Marie Antoinette win.
10:05: jean hersholt award Sherry Lansing's dress is incredible. Good for her. Tom Cruise, however, still creepy.
10:10: Ellen finds out that doing improv in an audience of actors is a tricky business.
10:12 cinematography Will anything this year NOT reference consumer-created media? Why did we need to see Gwynneth walk out from backstage? I continue to like the "you-are-in-their-head" packages of the nominees. Is anyone surprised at Pan's Labyrinth? I mean, seriously: y'all should have voted a straight shot for Pan's Labyrinth for all the visual pretty stuff.
10:14: Hurrah for Little Miss Sunshine interpretive dance, but I didn't really get that MasterCard ad.
10:20: visual effects My love for Robert Downey Jr is pure and true, though I hate him for fucking up the romance arc on Ally McBeal. Naomi looks awesome as always; I love the sash. PoTC fans rejoice.
10:25: foreign film Montage! Of foreign films! From Catherine Deneuve and Ken Watanabe! Followed by more foreigners, from Australia (Cate Blanchett) and England (Clive Owen). The Lives of Others leads to more fucked up Oscar polls, but C____ tells me it's very good.
10:35: supporting actress So not only did Jennifer Hudson win, but she gets her Oscar and a kiss from George Clooney. AND she took that stupid bolero off.
10:40: babel It has been recommended. I may catch it on video.
10:42: documentary short Man, that weird Bond girl gets to stand next to Gael Garcia Bernal. hmph. Plus, another category to fuck up your Oscar pool.
10:45: documentary feature Okay, like, people who've won an Oscar don't get to say too much, but Jerry gets to do five minutes? I mean, seriously. But wow, An Inconvenient Truth actually won! Well, that's something thrown to all you Oscar pool losers.
10:50: lifetime achievement award Clint, totally the right person to present to Ennio Morricone, but yeah, he should have worn his glasses. Also perhaps they should have got a simultaneous translator for Ennio, though it seems that Clint was up for it. I mostly just dug his old man glasses; he kinda looks like my grandad.
11:04: I still fucking hate that robot GM ad.
11:06: original score Hugh Jackman, to me, always seems to look like he thinks it's 1973. I love Penelope's dress, though. OMG, back to back wins for Gustavo Santaolalla! Nice speech, too.
11:12: original screenplay You know, for theme songs it's tough to beat Spiderman for sheer grooviness. Kirsten's dress is ass, though. YAY Little Miss Sunshine!!!!!!
11:20: It's a motherfucking diva-off! Actually, that's not true, and it was awesome to see each of the three Dreamgirls get their own solo and share the stage pretty well.
11:30: So the sweep is really, sort of, An Inconvenient Truth, and I love Melissa laying a big wet one on the ol' ball and chain before running up to get her Oscar.
11:35 little miss sunshine Aw, I love that Steve Carrell narrated the package. It really was my favorite film of 2006.
11:37: So the thing about Michael Mann's montage that stuck out for me was looking at Tom Cruise in Magnolia and thinking, wow, we really should have known. Nice music cues, but we expect no less from Mr. Mann.
11:40: editing Yay for the continuing curvy hotness of Kate Winslet! Thelma keeps winning for Marty's movies and then Marty doesn't win and it's a lame thing, ACADEMY!
11:45: Jodie Foster, looking really hot though she really does not have the most ladylike walk, comes out to intro my secret favorite part of any award show: the montage of people who've died, died. Person whose death I missed: Tamara Dobson.
11:52: actress Home stretch, friends. Wow, PSH looks like ass. I know he's doing a play here in NY, but still, dude, do something with your hair for one damn night. Go Helen Mirren!
12:01: actor Of her three outfits (burgundy velvet, white jacket, blue vest and shirt) I like the third one best. Reese, of course, looks amazing. Wow, Forest Whittaker! That is so awesome! Aww, and he's tearing up a little.
12:04: director Hold your breath, y'all! YAY! GO MARTY! W00T!!!!!! I love that he got it from those three directors, too.
12:10: the queen Again, a good choice, with Helen Mirren narrating, and then shown sitting there in a sort of daze next to good old Taylor and clutching her Oscar.
12:13: picture Why is Diane Keaton there? I mean, whatever with her, seriously, since all she does anymore is play annoying mothers. Does Jack ever play a father? Ever? Anyway, hurrah for The Departed!
So The Departed wins picture, director, editing, and screenplay. Three for Pan's Labyrinth, and two for An Inconvenient Truth, Little Miss Sunshine and Dreamgirls. That's some even distribution, friends.
