It's all about Weevil and you know it.
Oct. 20th, 2006 02:12 amFirst, I have to say, VM starting up makes me miss
mistful that much more, since she was a big part of watching it last spring.
3.01: "Welcome Wagon" I like the new characters. I'm willing to buy Logan following VM to Hearst and then Dick following Logan. The Keith storyline was a little too obscure and I had to think hard to remember what was even going on with him at the end of last year. But Wallace is always brilliant (I'm hoping that he'll be in every episode this year—anyone have any insight on that?). Mostly, though, I'm just so very glad she's back.
3.02: "My Big Fat Greek Rush Week" I have a weakness for Veronica exploiting her cute blondeness for her own nefarious ends, and watching Mac trying to be a good friend for Parker was pretty cool. Homer's sociology experiment was super lame, even if I like seeing Wallace and Logan interact, especially if Wallace outsmarts Logan. (Which he didn't exactly—Logan figured it out, but couldn't keep his teammate from spilling.) Again, the Keith story was sort of annoying but I really appreciated his fallibility. Poor Keith, he really does try so hard. Meanwhile I think they're doing a good job integrating the rape mystery, though it's clear that moving to three smaller mysteries will make the show more episodic in a lot of ways. Nevertheless I think it was a good move on Rob Thomas's part.
3.03: "Wichita Linebacker" (First? I love "Wichita Lineman.") Aww, the football player was adorable even though the reveal was trickier than it needed to be IMO. Nice to see that Piz will have some area of competence, not unlike Wallace who seems to be so junior to VM but in reality is a total star. But mostly? OMG Weevil! I wish Weevil could have stayed as apprentice to Keith, and I do think that he'll return to Keith before the end of the year. Seeing him taking to PI work like a fish to water made my end-of-the-show Veronica/Weevil shippy hard leap; can't you see them Tommy & Tuppence-ing off into the sunset? Well, for now he'll be Veronica's key source, and that's something.
What do you think?

Date: 2006-10-20 11:15 am (UTC)I missed Weevil. I hope he'll really get serious interaction, and if Wallace gets as little screentime as last season, I'll be upset. I'm glad the show isn't taking shortcuts, though. It would have felt too smooth if Veronica had gotten the job at the paper without trouble, and Weevil would have lost his bad-boy behaviour too easily. As it is, I'm willing to suspend my disbelief on how easily Weevil got the job at uni, and at how happy and not-angry he seemed - that smile looked very genuine and not really as pained as I would expect it to be. Where's the resentment over being pulled out of graduation? Has Weevil gone the way of the zen just because he had so much fun at Mars Investigations? Huh.

Date: 2006-10-21 05:14 pm (UTC)On the VM podcast the writer said some interesting things about the social experiment that make its placement in this episode make more sense. You can get the podcast through the VM myspace—I don't think it's on itunes, though it might be.
I think they've really pared down the cast and will be able to feature people more often. The problem last year was that UPN simply didn't give Rob Thomas the budget to have Weevil and Wallace around all the time; the only people with near-season contracts were VM, Keith and Logan. He had to play checkers with everyone else. I think that's another reason that last season was so disjointed.
