Just hearing Top Chef's theme music made me yearn for the end of last season's montage of cheftestants, with Harold cooly throwing his coat over his shoulder. But they gave me plenty of Harold anyway, by making him the guest judge for the premiere. He's just so gorgeous, even when he isn't being Mr McCrankyPants. I have a thing for chest hair—I know many of you don't—but that unbuttoned shirt at the judges' table? OMG. sigh Well, at least Bravo has given him a blog, so we'll know as soon as his restaurant opens and can all troop down for a great meal.
As for the people we'll actually be seeing over the course of this season, Padma Lakshmi is already a huge improvement over the KatieBot, given that she not only is an actual cook and has written actual cookbooks but also has an actual personality. (I'm not sure, though, what the deal is with Top Chef and the wives of the rich and famous, as Padma's hubbie is Salman Rushdie.) It's comforting, somehow, that Tom Colicchio is still a prick, though at least now he's not a bad judge-mentor hybrid, but a spy in the kitchen of pain. And I love Gail; I think her contributions at the judges' table are enlightened and it's great to see her talking more already this season. I don't have a handle on the cheftestants yet, though I feel that I'll miss Suyai. Ilan is a cutie and Marcel is an ass and Mia and Betty seem cool, but that's as far as it goes right now, at least for me.
ETA: Speaking of pretty cooks, I'm loving Nigella's Feasts on the Food Network. She's just so fun and interesting and I love her attitude.
