The Black New Year's Eve party was awesome as always and included close friends, good food (crab cakes! deviled eggs! lemon tart!), great drinks (rose Hollytinis! absinthe! mysterious pre-mixed shots!), and fire juggling in the front yard under the falling snow. I got my midnight kiss from [livejournal.com profile] bowdlerized but as to any other kissing that may or may not have happened at this party I can only say that it wasn't done by me. As Theo said, this was my real holiday and it was fabulous.

When I arrived on Thursday Holly said she had a specific task for each of us, and my mission was to create a mix for the party. (Yeah, no pressure.) I worked feverishly for two days, editing piles of music from Theo, Holly, Ruby, CC and Josh into a mix within the following parameters set by Holly:
7:30-9:30 Jazzy cocktail hour
9:30-11:30 Fun dance music
11:30-12:30 Hour of crazy
12:30-2:30 Debauchery
2:30--> Chill out
I also wanted to time it out so the songs would stop and give us a break for the actual New Year ball drop countdown, etc. There needed to be a sprinkling of old favorites but tons of new stuff, because this is a hip crowd. No real Motown and only two disco songs because this isn't a wedding and I don't have to please someone's Aunt Shirley. Where I took out old "warhorses" I tried to replace them, like "Cherry Cherry" for "Sweet Caroline." I'm pleased by the result, and got enough compliments from hosts and guests that I am sharing this with you now.

The mix starts off with one of my favorite holiday songs and swings harder and harder until the "we are so badass" theme from Kill Bill (currently in a billion car commercials).

An intense hour follows with a break of ten minutes for ball dropping and assorted zanyness right after "Hey Ya!" [livejournal.com profile] moony said the first song she listens to every year is "New Year's Day" and really, I can't argue with that. However, all was certainly not quiet!

Next was the mix for the general insanity that follows midnight. It was hopeless to get the thing to under three hours, so I stopped trying. However, this year the party ended a little sooner than earlier years, so we actually turned off somewhere in the middle of "Touched" and all went to bed. More techno and hip hop here, as we started partying like the rock stars we are.

My reward, other than happy hosts and guests, is a ton of music from my friends (we ran the mix off my laptop) and the knowledge that yes, I could create a good mix that would satisfy folks 20-40 for hours.

Happy 2006, everyone!

Oh, wow, thanks for posting this! I'm rubbish at picking out music, so I'm going to save your list for future reference.
