Help? Tailors?

Okay, I have now gone through all of my own contacts and resources and no one knows tailors who do significant alterations. I have to get a bridesmaid's dress fitted, and I've never had to get this done on my own (that is, not at the bridal shop) and frankly, I don't trust drycleaners to clean my clothes, so I'm reluctant to just go down the street to the drycleaner-that-has-a-tailor. I mean, this isn't hemming a pair of pants here.

Does anyone know of a tailor in New York who does alterations like that? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If not, then I'll just take my chances on citysearch—I just have no sense whatsoever how much it should cost, etc.
