Dare I imagine that the appearance of another mailbox key under my door means that I will finally be getting mail in my own apartment building? I was going to trot down to the post office this morning but I am far too lazy.

I worked far too much this week. However I did have time for the season finale of Veronica Mars with [livejournal.com profile] cassandraclaire on Tuesday, Sin City with [livejournal.com profile] ali_wildgoose on Wednesday, a work going-away party Thursday, and dinner with CC, [livejournal.com profile] tromboneborges and [livejournal.com profile] blackholly last night. I'm hoping next week will be relatively quiet. I could use the rest! I wish I had something coherent to say about Sin City or Veronica Mars, but all I can manage is, "awesome".

Today, writing. Tomorrow, other things.

Oooo that would be nice! I've always had mail delievered to my apt, but our post office is a bitch and won't leave actual packages in the office.

I just make sure everything I mail order is sent UPS. That'll show 'em. GRRR

No, no, like, I don't get letters. We haven't had any mail delivery for SIX WEEKS because our building is in some bizarre fight with the post office, so I have to go down to the post office to get my fucking mail, and they're only open 8:30 to 5:30 weekdays and until noon on Saturday and like, I work. But I'll go Monday at lunch. I seriously don't feel like dressing at the mo.

Oh yeah, I got that you weren't getting ANY mail at your apt.

What I meant was that I don't get packages (I have to go get them at the post office), but I do get my regular mail at home, and I can't imagine how badly that would suck to NOT get your mail, cause just not getting the occasional PACKAGE drives me nuts.

In short, WOE.

Now, don't go getting all crazy. Next thing you know, you'll be expecting proper plumbing.

And you DID tell me you got jam, didn't you? I remember that I was going to send more just for grins but I think I remember that it showed up.

I totally did, and I keep meaning to post about it, as I've been eating it on my english muffin every morning and yum!

A non leaking kitchen drain, no holes in my floor, fixed tile, and an exterminator, that would all be nice.

I saw that, and I know it's different for you because you're a big fan of Spacey, but you're right, it is never the same. They did High Society a few years ago on Broadway and it was pretty atrocious, and that was with Cole Porter! They changed the locale back to Philadelphia and it had the plot points of Philadelphia story but with the songs of High Society (like, Dext was a ship builder again instead of a jazz band leader) and it was just lame. And Jennifer Ehle strikes me as miscast.

If Bow hasn't seen it yet, then I'm strapping her down the second she gets back to NYC and showing her the film.

When Las was here we were supposed to watch a bunch of old movies, starting with the Phil. Story, but we both were too tired in the end. I think it's ironic that when Bow was here we didn't have enough time to really do anything like that, because it would have been the first movie I would have shown her. Although maybe it's better that she *didn't* see the movie first. I have a paranoid feeling it might have ruined any other version. (And dude. SO not a fan of High Society, in any form. The music's fabulous, but just--gah, I can't imagine it ever having the sheer wit and sparkle of the original, if only because the pace of the original is so perfect it would be hard to insert a bunch of musical numbers and still retain it.)

As for Spacey, since his Oscar win I'm pretty much of the 'Gah, what was I thinking?' mentality about him, because everything he's done since has *sucked*. But it also pains me to think of him floundering in such a wonderful wonderful role as Dexter, opposite such a fabulous actress as JE.

I can't say I think Jennifer Ehle is miscast so much as maybe too prototypical for the role? She's known primarily for playing one saucy headstrong female who engages in a battle of wits with her romantic rival; and I strongly feel that the character of Tracy is based on the character of Austen's Emma anyway--it seems as if there's too much in common between the two roles for her to be able to create a distinguishable Tracy from the mix. Although I think she's a fabulous and versatile actress and if anybody could manage it, it'd be her.

Re High Society, have you seen the original film? It really is lovely, especially
'Well Did You Evah" and all the interactions between Cosby and Sinatra. The dynamic between the characters is rather different. Also, when I see the original, where Mike and Liz are looking at the gifts I always have "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" running through my head! Cole Porter did such a pitch-perfect job working out what songs should go where. I don't like it more than the original, of course, but I do like it as a companion piece, as though it were a commentary on the original.

Spacey does seem to be doing far too much tap dancing around the drain. I think he started taking himself too seriously.

The quality of Ehle that I though was completely perfect for Lizzie Bennett and her role in Design for Living is that she always seems on the verge of laughter—even in Possession I think it served her well, that sort of bemused expression. But Tracy isn't fun; that's the whole thing about Tracy. So I don't know that she could reign that in successfully, that sense of humor about herself, in order to portray this character that sees things much more seriously.
