Dude. It is one thing to vote for a nonentity that gives you a giggle. (e.g. Ross Perot) It's another to vote for something that's actively vile, even in the description. (e.g. GWB)

Well, and there are a lot of people here who lost jobs when Enron went under, including Marc. V. scary months, there.

They had two profs on The Today Show this morning arguing about it and MAN it was such an old-school academic argument.

An old-school academic argument about free speech? Or about women in math and science? FAS hates him anyway because he's such an autocratic prick.

I didn't realize Marc worked at Enron. ugh. I used to work on MCI, for about five minutes just before WorldCom bought them. I remember it all seemed very odd at the time. See, this is what happens when the people running the economy are fund managers and all anyone cares about is their stock price.

Actually, they got into this argument about some kind of petition that Professor A said that Professor B signed, and Professor B said, "Actually, no, I didn't sign it!" and Professor A responded with "Well, you supported it, at any rate." And Matt Lauer sort of panicked while these tried to grind their extremely worn axes there in front of him, and you could see that there were just years and years of hostility behind it all.

Marc was working for IBM doing contracted support work for Enron when it started to hit the skids. They actually cancelled their contract with IBM about four weeks before the story broke, saying that they were going to handle all of their IT in-house from that time forward. It's now pretty clear that they saw the writing on the wall and were trying to generate quick cash by not having to reup the contract.
