Okay, so I actually had to go through 30 songs to get this, because some were instrumentals and some I don't even know so I didn't really want to put them here. But, here's my ipod on shuffle:

1. Promises are carved out of love, with a fire in the heart.

2. Hey girl, I thought we were the right combination. Poison Arrow, ABC. [livejournal.com profile] hermorrine

3. Tell me who I have to be to get some reciprocity. Ex-Factor, Lauryn Hill. [livejournal.com profile] tea_and_toast

4. I'd like to believe in the terrible truth, in the beautiful lie. There Goes God, Crowded House. [livejournal.com profile] heidi8

5. Ooh child, this love affair ain't what it was. Sometimes, Erykah Badu. [livejournal.com profile] tea_and_toast

6. My wife is proud to tell me of her love affairs. On Any Other Day, The Police [livejournal.com profile] ciceronianus

7. Touches everything I have and it never goes away.

8. The lights went on and everybody screamed surprise. Nails In Your Feet, Crowded House [livejournal.com profile] heidi8

9. I can't explain the silver rain that found me--or was that a moonlit veil? Midnight Sun, Ella Fitzgerald [livejournal.com profile] ciceronianus

10. All's fair in passion and war, but my disadvantage is, I fell in love.

11. You come from far away, with pictures in your eyes.

12. In the empire of the senses, you're the queen of all you survey. Love Is the Seventh Wave, Sting. [livejournal.com profile] hermorrine

13. There's a splinter in your eye and it reads, "react" (R-E-A-C-T) Harborcoat, REM. [livejournal.com profile] black_and_bloom

14. So much more attractive, inside the (moral kiosk) Moral Kiosk, REM. [livejournal.com profile] black_and_bloom

15. Comes the morning and the headlights fade away. The Living Daylights, a-ha [livejournal.com profile] ciceronianus

16. The wounds she gave me were the wounds that would heal me.

17. Catch me if you can but don't delay.

18. Millions played at monopoly, rolling the dice of their lives.

19. I'm not blind and I know that you want to want me but you can't let go. Burning Up, Madonna [livejournal.com profile] ciceronianus

20. It's just a hyphenated word. Get it out; I'm sure I'll be all right. Let 'Er Rip, Dixie Chicks. [livejournal.com profile] tea_and_toast

Also, I think [livejournal.com profile] calloocallay should do a meme of book quotes.

About to pass out, but I'll play before bed

(3) Exfactor - Lauryn Hill
(20) Let 'Er Rip - Dixie Chicks

Only ones I got on the first pass. *collapses*

BTW, I think I forgot to say so when I was commenting, but thanks for the response re. the meritocracy thing. I hate not knowing ANYTHING about a topic. It drives me nuts because I don't even know where to start with the questions.

Well, I'm no gov jock, as we said in college. (H being what it is, of course you didn't major in poly sci; you concentrated in government.) But that seems like the concept. I'm sure I totally failed on key subtleties.

I would have expected no less than #20 and Nancy is likely to be annoyed that you beat her out. Dionne, on the other hand, will be annoyed at #3. HA I say.

Considering that I spent most of my undergraduate education obsessing on really pointless things like quantum mechanics and advanced linear algebra, you're worlds and worlds ahead of me here. The real pity is that I don't remember much of that stuff, either.

Just remembered #5. These drive me nuts because if there's even a niggle of recognition I can't just let it go.

Well, if there was one, it would drive me nuts, but lately I've been looking at them and thinking, I don't know any of these songs, damnit!

There is this great moment in Love Story--not a movie full of great moments, admittedly, but it is the H Rocky Horror--where Jenny is dying and she says something about how she used to know all the Mozart something-or-others, being that she'd been a music major, and she couldn't remember it anymore, and I've always related to that. Once upon a time, I had all this abstruse, specialized knowledge, and now I don't really remember half of it.

9 is an American Songbook standard anyway. I bet you have Dinah Washington in mind. The version I have is by Ella Fitzgerald.

Well done on the a-ha especially. I have to say when the Police song came on my ipod I had to grin. My fine young son has turned out gay!

Mine would be so boring. It would be all, Reader, I married him. and, Marley was dead to begin with. I'll do my best, though.

Well, we've had movies and songs so we should have books, and I feel you will set an excellent standard, just naturally. One always feels one's own quotes are boring as one already knows them, and knows them well!

I love that icon. I'm so glad you still have it.

14. Moral Kiosk, R.E.M.

Drive by guesses from an R.E.M. fan!

I cannot even tell you how difficult it was to pull lyrics from Moral Kiosk. Who knows what he is saying in the verse? All you could ever hear was, "So much more attractive inside the moral kiosk."

HOwever, in college we used to refer to all those kiosks with fliers as moral kiosks.

Well done! Am so glad you drove by!

I know! Moral Kiosk is a bit of an enigma... "???? scandals in the twilight" and "idle hands are ????" ...not many complete sentences to choose from, even after 20 years (!) of listening to that album.

Love the lyrics memes!

Thanks for leaving it open for just that one more day. ;)
