I was in the fifth month of my post-grad school internship, and someone heard it over the radio, and at first, of course, they couldn't identify the body (because he'd shot his head off) but everyone knew it was his. Some boomer in the office said it was like Lennon but I said no, it was more like if Lennon had died after Rubber Soul. And my friend had to write the article for the New Yorker and he said, "I have to tell the old folks why we care." So he did.

I really hope that not too many people change their behaviour because of the hate thread, because that would be too bad. If someone hates you, they hate you. It's irrational, and they're going to do it no matter what you do, so you might as well do as you please. I think it just makes sense to post personal things behind a filter, or even in a separate friends-only journal altogether, but that may just be me.

at the moment, I don't remember who died first - river or cobain, but their deaths were six months apart, and always feel in tandem to me, like it's the moment when we moved from Reality Bites to something very different.

And yes, like if we'd lost John after Rubber Soul, like losing River was like losing James Dean if he'd had a chance to make a dozen more films.
