The Parade
Jun. 30th, 2002 08:12 pmwas enormous fun, as always, a little hot but that was okay. Three hours long. Someone said it would be 45 minutes long, but there were all these pauses so all the divas could make an entrance.
Special shout outs to:
—SAGE. Those are the seniors; there was an ancient lesbian there with her walker—fabulous
—PFLAGs from about 7 counties in the tri-state area. Some kid that looked around 15 was carrying a sign that said, "Hip hip hooray, my grandmother's gay."
—All those out teens. Go them!
—The cheerleaders and the flag corps. Great work.
—Supremely excellent Liza Minelli impersonator. Comment from the crowd was that she was probably wearing less make up than the real Liza.
—The gay cops, a particular favorite of P___, who came up from DC for NY Pride.
—The gay father standing in front of me with his nine-year-old daughter, who got all the cool favors like the lollypops and frisbees and such.
Adding an extra element of the surreal (as if this parade needed it) was the World Cup win. Every now and then, some little Brazilian papi would rollerblade by in bright green sequined hot pants and a headdress, a rainbow flag in one hand and a Brazilan flag in the other, shouting, "Viva Brazil!"
