Everyone's kinda grouchy today, eh? And I'm not saying that y'all have to be cheerful, just that my flist and twitterfeed all seem pretty hostile this morning. Is a good response to that to be cheerful or is that more angry-making?
Anyway, more icon meme! If you'd like me to pick six icons for you, go here. These pics are from

So about eighteen months or so ago, a friend of mine got rather upset at the recurring "favorite character battle" brackets that float around fandom and usually end up with the slash boy of the moment winning and the ladies falling by the wayside early. There was even more anger about the whole HBIC/Adam Lambert thing. So when March came around (the usual time for "alternative" brackets, the "real" bracket being about US college basketball) I decided to make an alternative to the alternative, and Color War was born. I took the 64 colors in the original Crayola pack and put them into a bracket and people voted and it was a lot of fun! I made myself this icon from the US stamp made to commemorate Crayola, which shows the very first Crayola 8-pack.
Unfortunately the friend I wanted to cheer up didn't participate! But I'm calling it a success all the same because a lot of people did. This year I'll probably do one for the current 64 color mix, or maybe just all the colors created since the 64, or something.

A while ago I decided that I didn't have enough non-shippy icons, and the ladies that I really admire are mostly musicians, so I made a pile of lady musician icons. This is Cindy Blackman, who used to play for Lenny Kravitz (you may remember her sick afro and bug shades) and is just awesome generally. I also really love drummers; my bff is a punk rock drummer.

This is a fairly famous sequence in the middle of All the President's Men where Woodward and Berenstein are going through White House book request slips at the Library of Congress. It's a huge pile of slips that the libarian just plonks down in front of them, and they just sit there and start going through them, and the camera does this extreme pullback. It's a striking shot, but also, it really feels like doing research, where you're looking for that one thing in a huge pile of crap.

Oh Harry/Hermione. The art is by my pal
ladylisse. I'm a big time, old-school, Pumpkin Pie, Harry/Hermione fanon shipper. I think they're interesting and sexy and have that "I saw you when you got up this morning" vibe--they know each other so well and just about the only person they can't pull a fast one on is each other. They're partners and that's how I write them.
(I don't really canon ship ever, about anything. Canon is canon, and not under my control. But with fanon, I can control what I choose to read and write and squee over. It's unfortunate that so many het shippers feel that noncanon shipping is disrespectful to the creators; I think it's why het fandom seems smaller than slash when it's really a lot larger.)
(Hahaha, I can never ever even mention H/Hr without feeling defensive. Oh HP fandom, oh fandom in general regarding "delusional shippers", how very much you suck. Yet, I'm thinking of all the people I've met since being in HP fandom and how they're all now going to be like, "I didn't realize that Clio was one of those people! Defriend!")

Team Coco! Conan O'Brien not only went to my alma mater a few years before I did but we had the same concentration. I've been a fairly loyal Conan viewer since the very first Late Night back in '93, though I don't really watch it all the time because I'm not always up. HUGELY looking forward to his new show this fall!!

So I have this group of friends, the four of us, who hung around together a lot at the Fiction Alley boards and are pretty much my oldest friends in fandom. One day I think Ely said something about how we were all like the Pink Ladies in Grease, and they all thought I was like Jan. So Ely made a bunch of icons for all of us, including the Jan icons I still use, and some of all the pink ladies. Luna isn't really online anymore, and we miss her. Sadly Ely passed away last August--very suddenly and very young. She was one of my best friends ever, and I miss her every day, but looking at the icons she made me always makes me smile.

Date: 2010-09-28 05:19 pm (UTC)I already vote for burnt sienna, cerulean blue, and copper in the crayon showdown.
I'm having a hard time re-tagging my posts. I started over and deleted all the tags that I imported from LJ (I mean, the tags are still at LJ, so I figured it would be fine). I went back about two years and retagged entries, but I don't have any consistency except for memes.

Date: 2010-09-28 06:22 pm (UTC)I think I'm going to do the next war all on the colors added since the original 64. I mean, there are 133 total colors, which is 69 additional colors, which is even more than I'd need.
