I finally watched The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, and I thought it was pretty fantastic. Definitely putting it on the DVR. More mysteries!

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sistermagpie I'm netflixing House of Eliott and loving that. No wonder Sofia on CSI seemed familiar; I'd forgotten that she played Evie Eliott.

I'm confused that Cupid seems to have returned, in pretty much the same form but with new actors. (Does this mean Sarah Paulson might be the new back!show killer?) The whole idea of redoing a TV show that was cancelled 10 years ago after one season makes me wonder about Rob Thomas's judgment, to be honest. I mean, why? And why did ABC ask in the first place? Why not push Paramount to greenlight the fucking Veronica Mars movie? (Or maybe not; they'd no doubt recast Weevil and Wallace with those two white guys from iCarly.)

Oy! I want to watch No. 1... but [livejournal.com profile] gallerae says she wants to read the books first. I ain't got that kinda time!

I was checking out the books in Borders but ultimately decided to go ahead with the show and get the books later. I mean, there are a bunch of them, and I'm doing a Sayers reread at the moment that might be followed by a Krantz reread depending what books are up at the house in Maine.

Of course, there's always netflixing the DVDs once she's read them! But I will say that Jill Scott is, of course, completely delightful.

The revisitation of Cupid baffles me. It was an okay show. Not something I regretted only had one season. It's not even like it's one of those seriously beloved single-season cancellations. Which, even if it were, who wants to see the show they missed, but with new actors?

Yeah, color me baffled as well. I saw the promos during DWTS and Castle and I was like, haven't we seen that show before, with the Pivs? Why, Rob, why? And why did ABC even want it? Anyway, the whole "She's Psyche because she's a psychiatrist, get it?" thing is a little too cute, and Piven made it a little more ambiguous—he really could be just a nut.

My understanding is that ABC lowered their number of episodes ordered for "Cupid" so Rob returned to focusing on the "Veronica Mars" movie. The last I heard was around mid-January he had a first draft of the script and was discussing it with Joel Silver and Paramount(?)... *crosses fingers*

Lowered them after seeing the pilot or after seeing the ratings? The premise still seems sort of silly to me, as silly as it did before, and I'm not sure why it should resonate more now.

I'm definitely hoping for a VM movie that doesn't suck, but even his ideas for a 4th season didn't have me that excited.

I am pretty sure it was after they saw the pilot - or perhaps mitigated by other factors - but it was definitely before the pilot had aired.

I know he has at least moved away from the FBI plot ideas (here's one of the articles about it from January (http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00021339.html)) - I just want some of those loose ends tied up!

I've read The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books. It's funny, I really enjoy them, but I don't really think of them as mysteries. The mysteries are not mysteries in the traditional sense, for me, and since they only take up maybe 10% of each book, but I read them for the atmosphere.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to watch the show until it comes out on DVD.

Then you should come over to see it, on a night that is convenient for both of us—even on the very Sunday. M is not good for me, T-W are nights for Idol, and you have quiz on Th, but Su or F could be good. I intend to keep it on the DVR for a good while in any case. Besides, we have your BSG3.

Also I have to work out a night for Firefly'ing, as Stella expressed an interest in rewatching it as I watch, if you are interested.

I've been totally curious about that show. Have you read the books? I see them everywhere.

Also Castle icon? Is that one good too?

I really like Castle a lot. It's kind of a throwback to that not too serious Rockford Files/Moonlighting sort of mystery. It's a procedural, because it's centered on cops, but it's not dark and intends to be a counter to all those really dark shows that are on now. No one's been punished just for having sex, and Beckett, the detective, is a strong feminist voice in the show.

I have not read the books, actually. But they were very well reviewed. Having seen the show, I would agree with the above comment that they aren't exactly mysteries—they aren't structured like mysteries, with the one mystery she's trying to solve, or even an overarching ongoing plot. It's more just that she is a detective and there are mysteries.

I'm going to give them both a shot. I love Nathan Fillion. I'd love to see him in something that stays on the air for more than a season.

THANK YOU! I was like, "But it's the same show that didn't work before and got canceled!" Why bring it back?
