shipping icon meme!
Jan. 9th, 2009 12:49 amAli says I made her create this meme, but that's not true. It was merely a suggestion. However, since it was my suggestion, I am honor-bound to fill it out myself! I only picked ships that I have more than one icon for, or otherwise it's not really a favorite, is it?
THE MEME: Pick your favorite icon for each of your ships, then fess up as to what you're doing on that boat in the first place.

The ship: Harry Potter: Seamus Finnigan / Dean Thomas
How did it seduce you? Seamus was a favorite from canon, and then I was reading this Neville/Percy fic that had Dean counseling Neville, when he was lovelorn for Seamus, and did have a sequel with him and Seamus. This was so early in my fic reading that my first fic of any substance was Seamus/Dean.
Why did you stick around? Look at them! They're so fucking adorable! And they could be canon—the last time we really see them, they're embracing. I mean, that welcome that Seamus gives Dean when he returns to Hogwarts? ♥ Also, Seamus is one of those characters who won't leave you alone once you let him move into your head. The icon is from GoF DVD extras, where for reasons known only to them, Devon Murray and Alfie Enoch are dancing with each other. The way Devon is looking at Alfie here—I can't help but think this was a special present for me,
amyamy,
kaalee, and
nothingbutfic. Seriously.
And that's why they're my default icon, not because I use them all the time, but because I like to be represented by them. Even if I didn't write them at all this year (sorry boys) they're my first and my bestest.

The ship: American Idol: Ryan Seacrest/Simon Cowell
How did it seduce you? It was in season 4, when Simon leaned over and chucked Ryan's hand with his fist, affectionately. Jacob noted it in the recap, I took another look, and I've been looking ever since.
Why did you stick around? Again, look at them! The reason people say that my stories are canon is because they write themselves! I mean, seriously, they are at this moment jet skiing around the Caribbean together. And they've been doing this since 2001. It's ridiculous. And I love them because they are completely superficial, but in a very deep way. They both know who they are, and don't try to be anything they're not. And the way they bounce off each other is as delightful as any George Cukor romantic comedy.

The ship: Harry Potter: Harry Potter/Hermione Granger
How did it seduce you? Canon, through book 4 at the time. The reason I ever stumbled upon fandom is that I was on nifty.org and someone had written weird revenge Harry/Draco, and I thought, someone must be writing other Harry Potter porn on the internet, googled Harry-Hermione, and ended up at FictionAlley. I love how in sync they are in canon, how well they understand each other, how much they enjoy each other, how Harry can just shrug off Hermione's bossiness but can't fool her for a second. I never thought the books would put them together, but I find their dynamic delightful.
Why did you stick around? God, I'm glad now that the books didn't go in that direction—I have good friends who were Harry/Ginny shippers and hated how that ship went down in canon. I stick around because they just make sense to me, and because the more I write about them the more sense they make.

The ship: Harry Potter: Draco Malfoy/Ginny Weasley
How did it seduce you? God, I don't even remember the first fic of this I read—could have been DT, could have been Liss's fic. I liked seeing another side of Ginny, and yes, I do like a reformed Draco.
Why did you stick around? They're sort of sparky and sexy and grown up in a way that the other ships unfortunately often aren't. At this point half my HP ships are really more about the characters that now reside in my own head, from writing my own fics, but I find their dynamic can reveal a lot about these two characters, especially around issues of family.

The ship: Harry Potter: Ron Weasley/Padma Patil
How did it seduce you? So I was writing this chaptered fic, and like many Harry/Hermione shippers, I needed to have a place to put Ron. I always liked Ron with a smart girl, even if I don't like Ron/Hermione much, so I thought about Ravenclaws, and that led me to his ill-fated Yule Ball date (hence the icon).
Why did you stick around? They're kind of mine! I'm sure others have written them both before and after me, but I wasn't influenced by any of that. And I see them as sort of sexy and interesting and just pleasing.

The ship: Harry Potter: Sirius Black/Remus Lupin
How did it seduce you? Mostly canon, but I can't really remember the first story I read about them. I was hooked, at any rate, and while I was writing EWFS I didn't want to read other people's takes on the characters, so I read piles and piles and piles of fic on the old sbrl yahoo email group.
Why did you stick around? Again, they just make sense! I love how the fic just gives them both a place of rest that I think they deserved. I like the idea that Sirius found that—and even canon suggests that he did, and that he had reconnected at least his friendship with Remus, so there's that. And I like the idea that you can try to make up for your youthful mistakes. (I hate that JKR doesn't agree.)

The ship: Harry Potter: Percy Weasley/Oliver Wood
How did it seduce you? Again, some fic or another? Probably the one that ended up with that drawing by Marta—the one where Percy had had a brother, or something? And Charlie gives him dragonhide clothing? Anyway, very early in my HP fandom career.
Why did you stick around? It's the nerd and the jock! The valedictorian and the captain of the football team! It's classic. Besides, they lived in the same room for seven years, even if they never actually talk to each other in canon. Also, Oliver is like, deeply geeky about Quidditch, like all true sports geeks. They won me over.

The ship: American Idol: Chris Richardson/Blake Lewis
How did it seduce you?
lillijulianne
Why did you stick around? The people, but also, they're just adorable! We've moved hard into the AU phase in Cake fandom, and they're all so fun and so interesting. It's not unlike Percy/Oliver, really. The traditionalist and the rebel, the jock and the drama geek, the coming together of complimentary opposites.
JOIN ME IN MEMING! Just paste this code in as many time as you have ships you want to talk about and fill in the details!
Hmm, I feel like I've sort of said the same thing about all these ships: they're adorable, they make sense, they spark, etc. And a lot of the ships that I have more than one icon of, or even have an icon of, often it's because I've written them and want icons to put with the fic. There's tons of things I actually ship but don't have icons for because I'm not sure when I'd use them. So this is a topsy-turvy list!
