This is my favorite thing in the universe right now:

I showed this to aethelflaed2 and we were talking about why Fosse's choreography looks so appropriate for a rap song, and really I think there's a straight line from the Fosse and Bennett Broadway choreography in the 70s and Michael Peters and Paula Abdul's work in the 80s, which let's face it, invented music video choreography in the first place. When Adam Shankman was judging on So You Think You Can Dance and Paula was in the audience, he pointed out how many of the choreographers his age had worked with Paula when she was doing the Oscars in the 90s, and they then influenced the pop choreography going on now. It's actually a pretty straight line. Go Paula!

Oh my god, that is awesome. And Go Gwen!! And I think you're right about that straight line. Which makes sense--videos were the place all the great choreography was happening in the 80s so naturally it was going to reflect the development in dance in general.

I've been coming back to watch this video ever since you made this post and it keeps getting progressively cooler.

I'm not an expert on this by any means, but I keep wondering if there's not also a direct link through Debbie Allen? She's worked with Fosse extensively, she starred in Fosse's Sweet Charity in the 80's, she taught Paula, and she had a huge influence on current choreographers.

(As an aside, I've only seen 6 eps but I love So you think you can dance. I keep wanting to go back and watch the previous seasons (and also this year's finale).)

It's funny because when you watch it with the hip hop it's sexy, but when you watch it with the original music it's rather twee.

You are totally right. It's like, Michael Bennett leads directly to Peters, but it's more Fosse-->Allen-->Paula, even if Paula, clearly all about the Fosse in very specific ways.

That's not Comfort, look at her curves! That's Donyelle from season 2; you can see Benji behind her. It's from the finale of season 2, when Benji, Travis, Donyelle and Heidi did a routine to SexyBack, as models. I highly recommend season 2. While I loved all the seasons, season 2 is my favorite; the group dances were particularly good that year.

oh! *facepalm* i think i was remembering comfort and somehow inserting her into that guys & dolls routine that i think katie and mark did??? i don't know.

i'm trying to procure all the back seasons for my mom as a christmas present. she's a total junkie and made me watch eps when she was here in august. (in turn i sent her iron man fanfic.)
