Date: 2008-08-14 10:09 pm (UTC)And there's a surprising amount of stuff on here I've just eaten because there are a lot of ethnic restaurants in NY.

Date: 2008-08-14 10:42 pm (UTC)Huevos Rancheros are just mexican eggs—fried eggs over beans with cheese and salsa, so if you like nachos, it's like, egg nachos.
Borcht is Russian beet root soup, so if you like beet root you'll like that. Sometimes it's chunky, sometimes it's pureed and sour cream is added so it's bright pink. Someone told me y'all put beet root on your burgers, so there you go.
Baba Ganooj is eggplant dip, so that depends on how you feel about eggplant.
Pho is beef noodle soup. It's Vietnamese but it isn't spicy at all, just beefy and noodly. Very comfort food.
I'm going to let you have the PB&J because peanut butter is so american, but you know, substitute your childhood sandwich of choice here, i think.
Steamed pork buns are that bbq pork you get at a chinese restaurant, stuffed into some dough and steamed.
Is pistachio ice cream unusual? My mother bought a lot of it.
omg heirloom tomatoes are really incredible more flavorful tomatoes that haven't been bred to be shipped and are therefore sort of plastic and flavorless. They're juicy and often different colors like orange and purple, but still taste like really great tomatoes.
Fresh wild berries, Liss! Berries are my favorite food, period.
Rice and beans are a Latin staple, but it's pretty much just rice and beans. That's, um, it. Rice, and some black or red beans.
Dulce de leche is caramel, essentially. YUM.
Baklava is filo dough layered with honey and nuts.
I like my floats with other sodas, especially orange soda, rather than root beer.
Doughnuts, Liss. Doughnuts. Glazed with sugar. Fried dough glazed with sugar that melts in your mouth.
Spaetzle is just egg noodles, that are homemade and usually put into soups.
S'mores: chocolate. marshmallow. graham crackers. melted goodness.
Didn't you have a beignet in New Orleans? At that place we had the H/Hr meet up? once again: fried dough.
Plantains are from south america and are sort of like bananas, but not as sweet, more starchy. Fried green plantains (tostones) are like chips. Fried yellow plantains (maduros) are like fried bananas, sort of caramel-y.
Gazpacho is cold tomato soup from spain, and I eat a LOT in the summer. you just put tomatoes and cucumbers and a little onion and some bell pepper (and some put celery but I don't like celery) and a little spice if you want it in a blender and blend it up, and add a little vinegar and oil. Mmmm.
Hostess fruit pies are just crappy mini-mart junk food pies, they come in apple and cherry and blueberry and lemon and they're next to the Hohos and ring dings and devil dogs and all that crap.
A bellini is sparkling wine like prosecco and some peach nectar or puree.
You would totally eat Criollo chocolate! It's like, the super duper bestest ever chocolate or something.
Flowers are nice in salads. Usually posies.
I am totally getting you chocolate pocky when you're here. They're a sort of cooky stick, covered in chocolate mousse.
Polenta is just italian cornmeal mush, cooked until it's thickened, and it gets hard enough to cut when it cools.
Spam is ham. In a can. Slightly spiced.
Mole poblano is a very mild chile in a savory chocolate sauce.
See? Most of that isn't spicy, or Asian, or seafood—and a lot of it you can get pretty much anywhere in the US, not just here in NYC.
Also, you're in London and you haven't had cream tea?

Date: 2008-08-15 07:28 pm (UTC)I don't eat eggplant or PJ, but I do like cheese and vegemite sandwiches :D I haven't seen a lot of pistachio icecream, and I don't eat raw tomatoes (I can eat 'em cooked if they're in a dish).
I hate Krispy Kreme donuts, I really do. They're the most horrible donuts I've ever had, apart from Tim Horton's. And you're right, I did have beignets - I completely missed them, sorry! I don't drink any alcohol, so would pass on Bellini.
I haven't had cream tea - I don't drink tea, period. Or coffee. But I will try some of this when we're together! Whee :D

Date: 2008-08-15 03:08 am (UTC)The best jerky I ever had was caribou. Amazing stuff. It was homemade, given by some Canadians, and I suspect I'll never have as good again. *sigh*
