I think this was the medley I was most looking forward to all week and you know, I expected the Brother Love and Song Sung Blue, but would it have killed you people to put in some goddamned Cherry Cherry?

I loved Ryan chatting with Constantine and Gina in the audience and oh, look, Ace and omg his brother (I ship Clio/Ace's brother). Super sweet call out to Paula and kisses all around—and boo on Fox for making an already chaotic show more ridiculous than it had to be. I cannot wait, seriously, for SYTYCD. Randy doing his, as Paula said, Carol Merrill bit was classic—as of course was Ryan spinning Simon's chair around to force him to pay attention to the matters at hand. Never mind Brooke's "We'll stay as long as we can."

Natasha Beddingfield looked weird to me, but I enjoyed Ryan's dorky hands-in-pockets must-not-look-gay sway dance that looked even dorkier in the middle of the clapping Idol'ers. So when Natasha went over to say hi to small David, did dCook stand because she's a lady, or because he thought she was coming to see him?

I might have ff'd through the questions if not for Simon's childhood crush showing up, which was awesome, as was Ryan clearly wanting her number.

NEIL! Okay so let me say, first, that he is always the same in some ways, and that same is AWESOME. The idea that he has some thing with Simon was amusing, too.

However much I enjoy me some Neil, I'm disappointed in next week's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame theme. Other than Mariah week and some Songs of Inspiration, we haven't heard many songs that date past 1990 and that was almost 20 years ago. Moderinizing a song is one thing, but singing a modern song is another thing entirely, and there needed to be more of that this season. A lot of ink has been spilled on the huge mistake to theme the semis and I agree; it was the one place where we could get a sense of what these kids are listening to on the radio, what kind of music they want to make. And in other years they've done "songs on the radio right now" or "songs from after 2000" as themes, so it's not unheard of. Rewarding retro sensibilities does not a good pop star make, or a particularly good show, either.

Hurrah for Jason working through the criticism to the system that underlies it—that bodes well for his future on the show. I'm glad they're telling small David to have fun because he really doesn't seem to be having enough of it.

Ryan was so sweet with poor Brooke. And she did get to where she could sing, so that was nice. It really was her time to go, but I'm so glad that she had some happy and confident moments at the end.

A friend on LJ recently asked why there is all this angst about the eliminations when so many of us are pretty sure that it will be David and David at the end (and yes, I will be titling that entry Welcome to the Boomtown, and if anyone has that song, I'd love to have it) and while I was answering about how we have our favorites and like to see more of them, another commenter talked about wanting the show to be "fair", for the worst singer to go home each week, and the two ideas merged in my head.

I wonder if we, as big fans of the show, want the "masses" of voters to vote in a way that we, clearly, do not. We have our favorites, and we vote for them week after week, even if they weren't good. In fact, if they weren't good we vote for them even more, to keep them safe. Yet, we want the "masses" to simply vote for whoever was good every week, when of course those "masses" have favorites, too. There was clearly a big group who loved KLC, much as I disliked her, and they kept voting for her every week, and in some ways it's frustrating, but really, how is that different from my voting for Castro or Cook all the time?

I know that no words I say or practical systemic things I point out can stem the angst. It isn't that I don't get emotionally attached to the contestants; I do, clearly. I hope that my attempts to keep this LJ a pretty calm space doesn't offend any of you, because that's not my intention.

Simon's childhood crush showing up

That was pretty hilarious. I had flipped over from Ghost Hunters and I totally forgot to go back to GH for a bit because I was cracking up at Simon wanting to stay on the line and chat up his first girl. :))

I had the same reaction. I was impressed that he's obviously thinking about what the judges are telling him, and thinking about what seems to work and what doesn't. It makes me that much more interested to see what he does next week.

You know, that's a good point and I hadn't really thought of it until now. I think that's why lots of people have been bored with the show this season, even though we have a lot of strong singers.

I have the strangest feeling it's going to be Syesha and wee!David at the end.

I have the feeling big David thought she was coming over to see him. It looked like a big 'ol slap to his ego when I saw it. Does he usually stand up when the girls come over (like his fellow contestants)?
