Idol Gives Back … BENJELLE!
Apr. 10th, 2008 06:12 pmI'm having a hard time getting down to work so I thought I'd put down my thoughts on last night's Idol Gives Back. Mostly, it was better in some ways that last year—a better show as a whole, which was probably because less of it was live and less of it was sort of silly and improvised, but that meant that it was also a little more staid. Also, I think there were fewer musical performances this year.
There is nothing I didn't love about the opening number. Fantastic showcase for all those So You Think You Can Dancers; it was glorious to see all those faces again. Funny to see that Jason can sing a dance song, and funnier to watch Ryan dancing like a goofball. Ali noted that no one else could have done the intro to the show and made it work and I concur.
Heart singing "Barracuda" was the best part of the evening. *buys from itunes* There just aren't enough occasions on television to see a 54-year-old woman start a rock song with a familiar, searing riff that she wrote herself. Ann and Nancy Wilson rule us all. Oh, speaking of amazing older women rockers, *buys Annie Lennox song from itunes* And while I'm not purchasing that track, let's also hear it for Gloria Estefan and Sheila E, and more SYTYCDancers!
American Idol finalists singing a Rent song is some kind of harmonic convergence of music fangirlyness that should have caused a tear in space but didn't, probably because during the start the sound people had KLC's mike mixed up too high, and because they chose to sing a song that had a real diva part in a year when they don't have any real divas. I watched "Seasons of Love" kind of wishing they were singing "La Vie Boheme." (For the record: D.Cook-Roger, Jason-Mark, Syesha-Mimi, Brooke-Joanne, Carly-Maureen, Michael-Collins, small David-Angel, KLC-Benny. Debate in comments.)
I can't get enough of Jimmy Kimmel roasting Simon—see, Ryan's not the only one obsessed with your nipples—though I kept thinking, where's your boyfriend Ben? I love that even at a charity event Sarah Silverman is still Sarah Silverman, though I kept thinking, where's your boyfriend Matt?
The skit leading into the TV band was dumb, and Teri Hatcher sounded eh on Carrie's song, but it was worth it to see Greg on drums and Chase on violin. I thought Carrie herself singing George Michael's "Praying for Time" was very nice, as was Mariah, though I begin to wonder if she keeps a wind machine in her purse. The Daughtry video was as weird as Carrie's was last year. Fergie was rather good, even on "Barracuda" which I wouldn't have expected.
Oh, and that last song? No thank you. I have an uneasy feeling that it was there to balance out the Rent song, but hey, at least we got the Rent song, right? Right?

Happily it was taken over by the whole Ryan-as-Maria Simon-as-Captain Von Trapp thing.
