Well, thanks to my fellow muse Anna, I am now on LJ. I decided that since it was writing that brought me here, it is writing that I will discuss, in the main, as my life--well, I'm sure it will intrude here and there around the edges, but let's say that it really isn't that interesting. The writing is, though. Probably because it's new.

God, this is so onanistic.

I always knew that at some point I would be doing something like this, but it seemed far off in the future. And then, my life underwent a profound change, and I ended up here. Writing. All the time. Every spare moment. This is doubly odd as I am not a kid--I'm 32. I knew that changes were coming, but who knew they'd bring me here?

I have fiction writer friends from college, and some of them were writers since they were eight, and one of them decided she'd rather write than go to medical school at the age of 24, and one of them took a break to have a son, and one of them is in the middle of her kid break. So while I knew that the writing would come, I always thought that to be a fiction writer, you had to have the bug from a very early age.

Apparently not.

Until now, I have only written essays, off and on, criticism and cultural theory and that sort of thing. Now, though, I'm creating, and it's a totally different thing. Hopefully, here, I'll be able to express what is going on in this totally new area of my life. Particularly as nearly all the people that know about it, are online, themselves.

Well, here goes nothing.

Well, I don't know about the "having to start young" thing with writing. I started writing (very bad) fiction when I was 13. My high school friends loved it. It was the equivalent of an on-going soap opera that they could influence because they knew the author! LOL. I find I write far less now than I did then and it's not lack of time, either. I also find that I don't write anywhere near as well as authors who started later - like yourself, for instance. I am a rather good reviewer however, which is probably because I did write for so long and also because I've done endless amounts of editing as part of my career.

Soooo... What's my point? My point is, you don't have to start early to be a writer (as you discovered) and starting early doesn't make you better than someone who started later either.

I love writing fiction for the escapism but I find I'm actually really a far better analytical writer (which would explain the 'good reviewer' thingie).

After all, here I am analyzing your journal entry - LOL! Okay, I'll stop now. *grins*

Nice talking to you, Jen.
