jlh: Debbie Harry, recently (music: Debbie Harry)

  1. Debbie Harry was on Soundcheck and was asked for her advice to young artists. I'm pretty sure the interviewer expected some kind of punk rock stay true to your sound and fuck the label answer, but what she said was, "Don't sign anything without good legal advice."
  2. Thom Yorke is awesome, and everyone loves Terry Gross.
  3. ATC on what Al Gore was doing after he conceded the presidential election in 2000: Then he traveled the world, gained some weight, grew a beard for a while, and put together a powerpoint presentation on global warming. I mean, you can't really argue with that as a summary.
  4. Re the Anderson trial: Are you fucking kidding me? An all-white jury? Did we walk into 1937 when I wasn't paying attention? I'm with the family's lawyer: "You kill a dog, you go to jail. You kill a little black boy and nothing happens." At least the state of Florida did the right thing, giving money to the family and shutting down the camp.
  5. And then the kid from Jena goes back to jail. I swear to god, some days I wonder why I even bother.
  6. And then I see the crazy Yuletide thing going on and I realize that I HAVE to bother or maybe no one else will. NOT ON, FANDOM.

I'm annoyed because someone sent me a text asking me if I was home at 2:15 but I didn't get it until 6:15. And I was home! Drat!

Wait, what Yuletide thing? Who made like an idiot now?

You can see the posts on metafandom, but basically a fan said, gee, I'm vaguely annoyed that the yuletide signups opened on sukkoth, and more annoyed that yuletide is called yuletide as it is not the most non denominational name. Privilege, what privilege? ensued.

Now, to be fair: the sign up bitch is sort of pointless, as yuletide signups go on for two weeks and are not time-sensitive. and the yuletide thing is fair, but you know, find me the year-end word. Also the OP was sarcastic about Xmas, saying it was nothing but food and gifts, which opened her up unnecessarily. When making controversial posts always avoid unnecessary sarcastic asides.

I feel stupid that I didn't even get the Xmas aside. I thought "It's not just a big dinner and some gifts" wasn't reducing Christmas to that, just referencing that aspect of Christmas, which is the part usually shown in movies and stuff, to say it was more.

Just to be clear: the OP, good points, a little whiny, not wanky. The comments of others? OMG so wanky.

I can't believe I read that post the first time and thought it was totally no big deal. A complaint, but more just a general response to the experience of being in her minority religion.

Debby Harry is awesome! I love that she said that.

I read this article where the coroner who did the original Anderson autopsy said he was going out to "celebrate" with some of the guards.

Honestly...celebrate? Even if you don't consider it manslaughter what the hell is there to celebrate? You killed a child.

That said--all white jury? WTF?

This is because you are a reasonable person. The wank happened in the comments where people complained that she was being whatever. Then other people posted and said, whether she's being whatever or not, she gets to say something, and then THEY got wanked in their comments. in-fucking-sane.

Debbie Harry is totes awesome.

That's the guy who got them off, as the defense was that the kid had previously undiagnosed sickle-cell like problems, but the second autopsy said no, it was because of the treatment. What an asshole.

The Florida case astonished me. So much for a "jury of his peers". I mean, they couldn't find one non-white person for that jury?

1. IIRC, I think that's what Dolly Parton says too. I like that.

Yeah, I mean I have a guy on probation with me who ground up his girlfriend's beta fish in the garbage disposal -- he got a felony. Those boot camps are notoriously brutal, especially the privately owned ones. What a terrible shame, seriously.

Re: Mychael Bell/Jena 6, I thought I had read he was sentenced to jail on a separate charge that had been pending throughout all the Jena 6-related stuff.
