On anniversaries
Jun. 1st, 2007 02:56 pmJune 1, 1967: Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is released. Now, personally, I feel Revolver is actually their best album, and I'm not really sure why Pepper gets so much yadda yadda, but it's a fun ride, has some great songs, and hey, everyone like to point at it a lot. (Including me, which we'll see later.) The Beatles CDs were released over the course of 1987, a few at a time leading up to and after the 20th anniversary of the release of Pepper, and as I had received a CD player as a present I was buying them up. I remember sitting on the floor of my bedroom listening to "She's Leaving Home" and crying, because I was, too.
May 1977: Star Wars is released! I saw it in the movie theater! I was 7! It was really fun!
June 14, 1987: Clio graduates from high school. As salutatorian, I gave a speech at commencement. We were encouraged to look for themes from the coming 200th anniversary of the Constitution, the 250th celebration of the founding of our town, or that we were graduating on Flag Day, and I alluded to all of these in the opening of my speech. But of course, I chose something else; I said, "It was 20 years ago today that Sergeant Pepper taught the band to play" and talked about "With a Little Help from My Friends" and that what we'd really take away from high school were the friendships we'd made, even if we didn't keep in touch we had been changed by the people around us, and made everyone cry.
May 20, 2002: I started this journal. And even with the crazy kerfuffles and general insanity and wank and ridiculousness and diva behaviors, I can't imagine the last five years of my life without the people who have been reading this thing. I thank you.
