I'm going to do separate posts on the papers/panels and Bourbon Street.

I also want to say, here, that while I had a really good time at The Witching Hour, it had its problems (though not the ones that were wanked about). Phoenix Rising was an impeccably run con, and I want to commend [livejournal.com profile] praetorianguard and her team for being mature enough to learn the lessons of TWH and apply them to the next project. We all make mistakes, but it's an adult who learns from them. I had a great time at PR, and everyone commented on how well everything went. Congrats to them!

As many of you noticed, I didn't sleep Wednesday night, but instead stayed up packing and doing some beauty things I might have put off, like a pedicure, and then met [livejournal.com profile] ziggy1278 for breakfast. He sent me off to the plane with a tummy full of eggs and an ipod full of Damien Rice to listen to before the concert. I met up with [livejournal.com profile] heidi8 and we shared a cab from the airport to the hotel, where I dumped my stuff and had a nice lunch in the hotel restaurant with my roommate [livejournal.com profile] evil_erato and the always-lovely [livejournal.com profile] danijo1. Then I napped, because man I was tired.

Crystal and I went to the opening dinner, then ran back up to the room to watch CSI with [livejournal.com profile] alissomora and [livejournal.com profile] eibbil_libbie. The folks in the van from 'bama arrived later—[livejournal.com profile] wordplay, [livejournal.com profile] longtimegone, [livejournal.com profile] slytherincess, [livejournal.com profile] allysonsedai, [livejournal.com profile] dezzikitty, [livejournal.com profile] malachan, and [livejournal.com profile] frayer—and a bunch of us went to the first of [livejournal.com profile] tartpants's many parties. I love parties full of fun people, and it was nice to meet [livejournal.com profile] oulangi over a big cup of punch.

Friday there weren't any panels that really appealed to me I started the day with a bit of breakfast—we got a great continental spread with the room—and then ran off to the Harry/Hermione meet up at Cafe du Monde, where Liss was handing out orange goodie bags and we all just chilled and chatted. I love my pumpkin pie peeps, for reals.

The rest of the day was spent just chilling; I wrote Rymon while [livejournal.com profile] wordplay worked on her paper. We went out to a fish dinner that was a bit insane on many levels and then went off to karaoke, which will get an entry of its own later, when I've worked out how I feel about it.

Saturday was full of panels, which will also get their own entry, after which we mostly just chilled out, wandering around Artists and Authors Night. Julie read some of a story of hers, and I bought some portraits of Seamus and Dean from [livejournal.com profile] seviet through Liss.

Sunday was also full of panels, and then a big fun dinner with 13 people piled into the hotel restaurant, and then we checked out the masquerade ball, which like any other formal party in a hotel ballroom made me feel like I was at a wedding. But the costumes were fantastic and the DJ seemed to generally know what he was doing. That said, conga lines are even worse when you have to use one hand to hold your skirt, which might be why they weren't that popular in the 1790s. We went at the very end, so we saw one of the Marie Antoinettes macking on some woman in an 1870s gown by the door.

After, I went up to Rene's final party that and hung out with Allyson, Erica, Freya and Rene, watched some Shaun of the Dead, did some dancing, drank really good gin thanks to Angie, listened to the guy from the Remus Lupins do an impromptu mini-set, played a drinking game with too many rules, and then scrambled after the candy that fell out of the piñata. Nothing could have topped that, so I split shortly after.

Monday morning I left, sharing a cab with Christine, and came home, changed, and ran out to the Damien Rice concert. So you could say that Z bookended my trip!

I like how they are "Rene's parties" in your eljay. It makes me feel unbearably scene and hip.

Aww, I wish I could've seen those before we left. I love her stuff!

And I had almost forgotten about the whole drink-spilling incident at Deanie's until you mentioned the 'bit insane' fish dinner. Ooh, and the waiter thinking that [livejournal.com profile] malachan was a girl! *snigger* I think I'm going to just have to make a 'favorite moments' post! :D

OMG, he thought Richard was a girl? *dies* See, losing my Storyville ticket sucked in many ways; that must have been before I made it back there. Hee.

And somebody I know (who WAS that? *thinks hard and fails*) bought the Ron portrait and it was gorgeous; I bet Seamus and Dean were, too.

Yes, several times over!

First, when the waiter came over he was standing behind Richard and addressed us all as 'ladies', but at the time I thought he just didn't see Richard at all. But then he keeps on saying it: "What can I get you ladies to drink?", etc.

When the waiter tries to get Richard's drink order, Richard is turned with his back to him talking to Meg, so the waiter actually taps him on the back and says, "What would you like to drink, MISS?" At which point I was forced to tell the poor man that Richard was indeed, male.

Hahahahaha.

Thank you! *blushes* I always value your opinion greatly because it’s so thoughtful and this one just thrills me. Everything should be a learning experience, I think, though we definitely had challenges for TWH that we didn’t have for Phoenix Rising, some of them completely obvious (bloody buses), some of them much less so unless you have some background information. I’m so, so thrilled that we did learn from TWH and could make decisions – some of them months and months ago, some of them just a couple days ago – that reflect that we did. I mean, hell, what a waste it would be if we kept putting on the same con with the same mistakes time after time. :P

Hallie and I founded Narrate Conferences because we believe very strongly in giving young (mostly) women a chance to fly: a chance to grow and experience and do what they do best in an atmosphere of support and guidance and freedom. We wanted to give our team a chance to make mistakes and learn from them – and then trust them enough to run a major event. Truly, this is my team’s accomplishment. I’m really just an incredibly lucky girl who is unbelievably privileged to be leading this team.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that I’m done blushing. :))

Even more, I’m so proud that we’ve been able to carve out a space in the fandom and the fan community where people can discuss, debate, and celebrate Harry Potter together, no matter their background or fan experience. This is the first HP con I’ve seen where the boundary between scholar and fan was almost entirely erased and I’m just thrilled that our attendees gave the event such a wonderful heart. Thank you, and everyone else, for attending and making it as wonderful as it was.

That was so hilarious. Because watching it from the beginning, you had to go from thinking the waiter just didn't notice him, to hoping he just would figure it out before he embarassed somebody, to realizing something had to be said because he was determined to tell Richard he thought he was a girl.

HAHAHAHA. Exactly!

The most ironic part? Is that at first I thought the *waiter* was a woman!

I think the waiter probably was a "woman" in his spare time. Just a vibe I got. :))

Whoever it was bought Harry and Ron. That Ksenia girl—the Russian brunette?—bought Neville while I was there. The girls hadn't been sold yet, sadly.

I find I have nothing to add to this awesome exchange, except how ironic since Richard was bursting with testosterone all weekend.

I bought the Ron. I would have grabbed the Seamus and Dean but someone got them first. *grins* [livejournal.com profile] r_becca got the one of Harry.
