I find that I don't have a lot to say about tonight's show. Idolator liveblogged it, though. [livejournal.com profile] ali_wildgoose was over, as she wasn't able to watch the show last night, so we started that at 8 and then moved over to tonight's extravaganza, so I was doing a lot of ff'ing through performances I didn't want to watch. Kelly Clarkson was amazing, though, as was Annie Lennox. The Stayin' Alive thing was cute and I wish Ryan would wear tshirts more often. Simon's Simpsons thing was sort of funny, but mostly, it was interesting to see how incredibly uncomfortable he was up on stage, and why he kept turning away from the camera is sort of a mystery. I mean, Randy was more of a pro up there than Simon was. Paula was just, well, Paula. Ryan was adorable with his need to redo the open, and the vamping, and Simon letting him twist in the wind, and anyone who thinks that the show is scripted, watch him with Jack Black, because Ryan is a really bad actor.

You know I love group songs, although group songs about changing the world, like, they should have been standing on risers in a studio in weird clothing, you know? Do you think Blake rushed making white trousers? Because those fit him quite well. Loved Chris's hoodie and Phil's cap and Jordin's strange tie things and LaKisha actually looked quite good and Melinda benefited from the lack of non-waist-sash.

In results news, I wondered about this a couple weeks ago, and then forgot as I was watching the results themselves, but that really was the only way they could work it. [livejournal.com profile] allysonsedai said that the Cake kids hope that Blake and Chris go off in a blaze of glory together next week, but I want Blake in my top 3. I'm hoping for LaKisha and Phil next week, but wouldn't be shocker if Chris went, though he was great this week. Maybe standing up to Simon put a fire in his belly, or it might just be close enough that everyone can smell it and is upping their game, as they should. What a fantastic top six; I'm pleased to hold onto them for another week.

I have a feeling that this week's drabbles are going to be pretty schmoopy. However, I am making up for this by posting porn next!

I am allll about the schmoopy. Which anyone that knows me knows (both from my fics and my LJ entries).

And the show was a mixed bag of things. To the point where I basically ignored it in my post about it tonight. I don't handle these things well at all.

But I loved the Bee Gees montage, mostly for Ryan, but also for Hugh Laurie. Though I wish that crazy TV Guide girl had been right about Johnny Depp.

Yes, yes, and more yes. I agree with everything. Especially the part about Ryan being a bad actor. *giggly facepalm*

I only saw bits and pieces of the show last night, as I was fielding phone calls regarding family stuff, but I LOVED Jack Black. The funniest thing to me was that he sounded so good that he had to make an effort to sound bad by being a big goofball. <3 I loved Annie Lennox; I wish I could have seen Kelly Clarkson. I'm not a huge Celine Dion fan, but the Elvis part of that duet was awesome.

I kind of thought the whole Jordin's-going-home fake out was cruel, though. I mean, dang. Poor kid.

So do you think maybe Simon disliked the sort of smarminess of the whole Very Special Idol thing, and that's why he seemed so uncomfortable? I wondered.

I think they did Jordin to keep you thinking that it was shocking, but yeah, she didn't weather it particularly well. I think Chris had figured out what was going on, so he wasn't particularly worried. Chris is feeling his power lately, which is kind of fun to see, and has clearly decided that he's going to fight for it but also that leaving at this point would be okay, too.

Kelly's is worth finding on You Tube, as she sounded fantastic.

I think Simon doesn't care about the camera but can't deal with facing the audience. He would look at Ryan, but not out at the crowd; it was like they hurt his eyes. Simon is actually very sincere in that he's very truthful and not a good faker, so I don't think it was the smarm as please, Simon loves smarm—he's the mastermind behind Il Divo.

That makes sense. And hee, r.e. Il Divo. Really? That was a good performance, too, incidentally.

By the way, what does 'cake' mean?

Hugh Laurie ruled me. He's like, this weird part of AI since we see his grouchy little House face every night in his promo shot before it starts. He is also just generally made of awesome and has been for so many years that I'm so pleased that he has this huge success and everyone thinks he's a hottie.

Jacob's recaplet for tonight was already interesting, so I can't wait to see what the recap will be. Do we know what the theme is for next week yet?

Chris/Blake. It's the singership of the year, and it's really taken off. Huge comm, and the boys know about it and think it's funny and when they're both asked to sign something they'll write "Cake forever!" on the bottom. So adorable. The comm, cakeforever is like, too much fangirl fun.

They're buddies and roommates, they have a special handshake dubbed the "cake shake", and they share a hoodie. (I changed the icon to show you the hoodie.)

I just—he adlibs for four hours every single day. I think people forget that he's a radio guy and therefore is fast on his feet. But OMG, scripted, he just is terrible.

Exactly. He's just so awkward when there's a precise script involved. Almost as awkward as Simon is on stage.

I don't mean to butt in but I couldn't help noticing - they know about "Cake"?! That's so awesome! And they sign stuff like that, too! That's hilarious. I now feel the need to give them something to autograph. And to see more fo the Cake Shake.

Best. Hoodie. Ever.

Yes--it's funny how much he sort of illustrates the whole "performer" aspect, because it's not about him being a great singer, necessarily, but he performs a song well. So, like you say, he almost had to do the silly dance to make it clear you were supposed to see he was bad.

Yup. I mean, I'd love to see him, or Mick Jagger, Rob Thomas, Sheryl Crow, or even Annie Lennox get up there on American Idol and perform like they're capable of, and have the judges critique them. Because maybe a couple of them are actually capable of sounding like, say, Melinda; in general, though, they're all less about polished, beautiful singing, and more about...well, everything else that makes them Rock Stars, you know?

Which is actually why I'd be fine with either Melinda or Blake winning the show. Melinda is a fabulous singer, but Blake makes up for lacking a gorgeous voice by having the balls to full-on do the rock star thing. :P

Indeed, Jacob's recaplet was interesting...hmm.

And erm...it's probably rock with Bon Jovi. Because that happens either next week or with the top 4, and to me it makes more sense for it to be next week. Though that would be such a weird combination.

Ryan = ♥ this show. When he was comforting the kids and telling that boy what a great dad he was, I literally felt my heart in my throat. I agree, the redo of the intro was adorable! As was his ad-libbing when whatever-it-was messed up. He's so comfortable in front of the camera; it amazes me.

but I want Blake in my top 3

*grin* As do I! But, realistically, neither he nor Chris will probably win, so why not make the slashiest, grandest exit ever?! ;) (Although, if Chris does leave before Blake, all the Cake votes will go to him and he should easily make the Top 3.)

I am making up for this by posting porn next!

I saw that! It's on my 'To Read' list of the day!

Very good advice. I did so, and wow. She is amazing. Also really gorgeous.

*flails*

So good.

I agree!

Did you notice there was no touching last night? (Though they touched in the African footage.) When Simon was on stage, Ryan kept his hands in his pockets and Simon kept his behind his back. Ryan should've tried to calm his obvious nerves with a pat on the back; I really expected him to. No touching at chair side either.

Ryan touched Randy while they were on stage together.
Though I think he was afraid Paula's cleavage would explode! Seriously, wtf was she thinking?
