Busy weekend!

I've never really joined another fandom, mostly because I've never really wanted to. I've lurked around a few communities reading my pairing-of-the-moment—what someone on metafandom called having an "affair" with a fandom—but I never wanted to squee about it on my LJ (much), never really wanted to get into canon conversations, etc. But this year talking and being silly with folks about American Idol has been such fun, like writing drabbles and squeeing with the like minded over silly shippy things. Yesterday I went around and friended a pile of my fellow rymon-fans and wow, I haven't friended people I haven't actually met in so long! ETA: Sorry I was unclear—I meant that AI finally isn't an affair, the way that like, CSI or punditslash were, where I just lurked around reading fic.

Not that I'm walking away from HP, mind you. After all, I'm headed to PR in May, and I've been writing some things lately that I think many of you will enjoy! There was a deamus chat yesterday and I was so sad that I couldn't stay for long, and totally plan to stay longer next time, but at least I got to commiserate with fellow S/D'ers about seeing all the promo photos of Dumbledore's Army from the OotP movie where a hot-and-badass!Dean doesn't quite make up for absent!Seamus. I can't say I'm looking forward to this movie. There might need to be some cocktails after.

With ziggy1278 here, I've seen a ton of movies. We saw Grindhouse last week and given that the opening weekend was disappointing, I'd say that if you planned on seeing it as a double feature, do it soon. We also saw Blades of Glory, which was pretty much what you think it's going to be, and The Hoax, which has an amazing cast and an interesting twist on how Clifford Irving conned so many into thinking he'd helped Howard Hughes write his autobiography back in 1971.

Last night Z and I went out with cassandraclare to get sushi and toast her awesome news. We didn't think we'd be out so late, but we stumbled into a fantastic dive bar (so great that I am totally keeping its location a secret) that was pretty empty for 9pm on a Saturday night and had a juke box AND booths. So we drank and waited for blackholly to arrive, whereupon she drove us to SoHo for a little late night supper at Lucky Strike. I got home at about 2:30 and I've been fuzzy headed all day, though part of that might be the weather. Good thing I mostly just have to read things today. Before that we did a bit of shopping and dude, the Old Navy graphic tees for boys, so much better than the ones for girls!

I've found recently that I am always in need of fellow Rymon fans. I need someone to squee with constantly. :-)

Dean is totally hot in the DA pics from OotP, but I did wonder about the absence of Seamus. :-/ I'm still really excited about the movie, but I know that once I get over the excitement of OMGFINALLYANEWHPMOVIE, I will be wanting tog ouge my eyes out and cut off my ears. *sigh* They just can't seem to get it right.

There's no Seamus in the DA pic because he was fighting with Harry, so he doesn't join the DA until their very last training session. It just reminds me of that whole subplot which fills me with WOE and yet, screentime for Seamus! So I'm all torn and shit.

I don't really understand the whole, there was no rymon for the last two years. There totally was!

There's no Seamus in the upcoming movie? O_o Do you mean they inexplicably cut him like Oliver in PoA, or just that he's not been in any promo shots yet?

He's just not in the DA promo pics because of the fight with Harry. Which really proves that he will be all over that movie, having the fight with Harry.

Having a fandom "affair" is a good thing. :D I'll always consider HP my "home fandom" (thought the X Files was really first), but I've since branched into other things, and that's good!

Well, I'm thinking of AI as my "springtime" fandom, or something. The affairs were like, the places where I was just sort of reading fic, where I would marathon and read a ton of the fic and not even really interact with the canon except in a cursory way: Nick/Gil CSI, Starsky and Hutch, a little Punditslash, House/Wilson right now. But I actually write AI and squee over it with people and review fics and support the pairing and all that so it feels more like a real thing, you know?

It's sort of nice, really, to do that without all the usual politics and blah blah blah. So freeing!

'having an "affair" with a fandom'

I was just thinking about that this weekend. All of a sudden I've been getting excited about all of these relatively new/young fandoms (Cake, Rymon, Supernatural) and it's been so much fun just taking in the exhiliration of a new love with all these strangers before things get bogged down with factions and wank.

It makes me feel all refreshed. :D

Well, Supernatural, who knows, but I think one reason that the idolslash doesn't get wanky is that it's so time limited. Unless you're doing Rymon or that Saula stuff you have just the one season, which is what is so fun about the Cake. And really the Rymon is more like an underlying element while the fangirls are mostly distracted by the pretty pretty singers. So it's just nice and fun and all of that.

I was thinking about why I often don't friend people I haven't met and all the political bullshit that coarses through HP or through the mediaslash fandoms because so many of them are the same people having the same silly wars with the snobbery and the misunderstandings and the bullshit and like, who cares? It's totally refreshing!

But when I said "affairs", for me AI isn't an affair, which is what makes it so different. I write fic, I review, I squee, I feel like I participate a bit more than I did in these other fandoms where I just read a lot of fic for a little while and then moved on.

Yes, good point. (I think, unfortunately, that SPN will eventually get wanky. It's growing so quickly and so passionately that wank seems inevitable. But maybe not.)

Hmm, well I suppose I misspoke a bit using that word. Cake, by its nature will be short lived, but I can't say that for Rymon and definitely not for SPN.

Well, and this is a really wanky thing for me to be saying but hell, I'm going to say it anyway, I think that one reason that SPN might get wanky other than the fact that it will simply have both the time and the population to get wanky is that it attracted its share of Random Militant Slashers, as Cassie liked to call them, the mediaslash types who float around from one Slash Movie/TV Show of the moment to another, bringing their readers and their reputations from other canons along with them. And when they do that you get a pile of people who got into the show via the slash rather than the reverse, and also folks who have an Idea of How Fandom Works, and they just recreate the same bullshit everywhere they go. I'm not saying everything that they recreate is bad? But I AM glad that they would not be particularly attracted to Idol not only because of the RPF prejudice but also because there just isn't enough time unless one is writing Rymon, and Rymon doesn't do it for them.

Though it's odd that Rymon doesn't do it for them, as one could certainly twist it into the misanthropic yet sexy genius intrigued by the prettier, younger, more impulsive hero-type and then write tons of random hurt-comfort fics, which is what the Random Militant Slashers seem to like to do, and it certainly is not difficult to get rid of Paula. So let's say a little prayer that they haven't shown up.

I think you and I will have to talk about this very extensively at PR and infuriate all those around us. HA! (Actually, that will be the weekend before the finals, OMG! So we'll certainly be all abuzz although by then I'm sure Cake will be Very Angsty Indeed.)

*nods* Exactly. Although, this group is a little different in its views of RPF - it's pretty rampant as well, although not *as* huge as the Wincest side. Maybe the only saving grace is that neither side has a moral leg to stand on? ;)

It's going to be a huge week for many fandoms. (SPN's finale will be while we're *at* PR.) Someone might have to sit on me to keep me from bouncing around from all the excitement. Heh.

I wonder what will happen to the Cake fans once either Blake or Chris are kicked off? Realistically, there's no way it will be just the two of them at the final. (And if I had to guess I'd say it'll be Chris who is kicked off first.) I'm already sad for the inevitable angsty ending - hell, it could happen tomorrow night!

Yay, friends!

It's seriously sort of frightening how fast American Idol (American Idol essentially meaning Rymon) has eaten my brain. But it's so much fun that I can't quite feel guilty about it. :D And it's made even better by the fact that some other people out there see the love too! And, oh, I have crazy amounts of love for all your awesome Rymon fics. They compliment the obsession so nicely.

So, in conclusion, fandom affairs ftw!

Rymon is total fun! I don't believe in guilty pleasures anyway, but Rymon is seriously what gets me through the bad singing and irritating bullshit and assorted yadda yadda of this entirely ridiculous but totally awesome show.
