jlh: Chibi of me in an apron with a cocktail glass and shaker. (With American Idol)

I watched this tonight at chez [livejournal.com profile] friendsofjunius (known to many of you as my buddy S____), with her DH who just got into AI this season, and her mother who hadn't seen it before. But watching it again at home was a little different and I'm not sure why.

Why was Randy working that 1964 look with the glasses and the super buzz cut?
  1. Melinda, "Sway." It was actually kind of a little boring. Simon was right that Melinda needs to come out and be amazing every single night to keep her votes up and avoid people forgetting to vote for her or taking her for granted. But the dress was excellent (finally they dropped the belt) and her hair was awesome.
  2. Lakisha, "Conga." This is one of those lousy wedding songs that gets Simon all grouchy and feeling like he's in a hotel. The dress was terrible from the back and and she didn't look like she was actually having all that much fun, but then LaKisha never really does, does she?
  3. Chris, "Smooth." I'm not a big fan of this song (which was also written by Rob Thomas). On second viewing it was a lot better than I'd originally thought, and Chris's voice sounded quite good, but he was often lost in the arrangement, which to me is more the fault of the sound than anything he was doing.
  4. Haley, "Turn the Beat Around." As Tim Gunn would say, that was a hot mess. Simon as usual was right, it's really just about how she's the only conventionally hot girl left but OMG she cannot sing. And Vicki Sue Robinson is screaming down from heaven, y'all.
  5. Phil, "Maria Maria." Just when you thought he couldn't be more boring, he was. S____'s mother was against the hat, but we all assured her that the bald head is much, much scarier.
  6. Jordin, "Rhythm's Gonna Get You." Another sort of boring Gloria Estefan song. Even bouncy Jordin couldn't liven this up enough to get me to really care. But her voice sounded great, she changed up the song a bit (though it was a really weird edit) and damn her booty looked good in those trousers!
  7. Blake, "I Need to Know." S____ is on record as hating on Marc Anthony. Me, I think that if Blake wanted to work the Cuban sugar plantation vibe that he should have had the right shirt on, and actually, I bet he'd look great in a planter's shirt. Again, on second listen his voice sounded really strong, stronger than it has in a few weeks, and he really sang. S____'s DH pointed out Blake's gay buddies in the audience. Heh. Cake forever!
  8. Sanjaya, "Besame Mucho." Hate the facial hair. Hate the English bridge. Clearly J.Lo's expectations were so lowered by his previous performances that she was pleasantly surprised, but jesus, couldn't you just hold that final note on key? What the hell? Now, if there were a week that Sanjaya might go, it would be this week, because he didn't suck but he also didn't do anything nutty.

I was wary of this theme night, and it went about as well as I expected. I can't stand "I Need to Know," and Blake made me not hate it as much, so he's my strong second choice after Jordin for tonight's favorite.

dialidol has Jordin next to last! Yikes, I'm glad I voted for her.

I am not currently looking forward to half the themes. I mean, Bon Jovi week could be cracktastic, or it could just completely suck. Country week really depends on who is left at that point; Chris and Blake and Melinda and prolly Jordin would be good but I can see Haley working Faith Hill and being OMG so boring. Disco is bound to be great, though.

It was awesome if Sanjaya went home after Simon and everyone said "Hey, you didn't suck. Congratulations."

But it aint happening yet. We are going to have to lose some GOOD people first.

And I don't know if Simon and Ryan were playing footsie but they sure were sitting pretty close together.

No, I fucked up that question and forgot to take it off "scale" and put it on "check". So let's say 10 is full of the ho-yay.

It seemed to me that Simon was in a 99% pissy mood again. :(

I think he was just bummed out when Kiki and Doolittle weren't that great, and then Chris and Jordin were only okay, and Phil was still boring, and Haley and Sanjaya were up to their usual schtick (and you know how he hates schtick) so he just seemed sort of, well, if he were anyone else I'd say depressed. Horrible, horrible song selections. I mean, "Turn the Beat Around" is Latin because Gloria covered it?

But he did liven up enough to spark with Ryan about dancing for him. I hope that country week isn't next or he's going to kill himself. Disco please. I don't have high hopes for "bullshit rock with Jon Bon Jovi" week either.

You may be right. I was bored and a little pissy myself. Latin week is always the same, with the same handful of songs. I should've started an office pool on who would sing "Turn the Beat Around," "Conga," and "Rhythm is Gonna Get You," which takes the prize for most boring by virtue of its repetition.

I put the dance quote up... The first thing I thought was: Naughty dance drabble! So, the night wasn't a total waste. ::wink::
