Well, would you look at that? I will admit, I didn't really dare to think it would happen—that's just me; I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than disappointed. Even if the Senate doesn't ultimately go Democrat after the billion and a half recounts to come (and to be honest I really never thought it would; I thought we had a good chance at the House but really didn't think about the Senate) with the House and the defeat of the SD abortion ban and the approval of stem cell research in MO.

That even one same-sex marriage amendment was defeated pleases me, as I think people are just not ready for the language (and the legal benefits of marriage are so transparent that no one understands what they are or what these nice domestic gays are fighting for). We would do well to remember that the Loving decision that made anti-miscegenation laws unconstitutional was only in 1967, and was about VIRGINIA. It's much easier to be all traditional about marriage than to explain why a same sex couple might want to get married, and honestly the movement hasn't done a great job with that.

I'm very encouraged that another result in the election is that Democrats handily beat Republicans among Hispanic voters. There's a push within that "permanent majority" Republican strategy to capture socially conservative Hispanics (and Blacks) but then they do their usual not-quite-racist shit (like freaking out over immigration) and can't quite do it. The "white and liking it" roots of the new conservative movement shows when they don't mean it to; I'm pleased that people of color continue to not be fooled by this. (I think what went on with Colin Powell doesn't help them; there's a sense that he was used badly by Bush.)

And now we get that "San Francisco liberal" as the Speaker of the House. Muy excellente.

How Karl Kopes...

Indeed. I'm betting Bill O'Reilly crapped his tighty-whities today, the bloviating toad.

and my home state of KS re-elected a dem woman governor. truly amazing.

reminded me of the joke 4 years ago when she was first running, against an incumbent crazy nativist asshole: do you want to stick with the boob with 2 nuts, or try out the nut with 2 boobs?
