For reasons I'm sure have more to do with money than anything else, they're running the first season of American Idol in syndication. I didn't watch it at the time, so it's pretty amazing to see it now. First, seeing Ryan as a young man on the make is amazing. With him hustling like hell to get into every shot he can it's easy to see how he overshadowed Brian Dunkelman. Well, at least Brian is getting work doing voice overs on these no doubt re-edited episodes. I don't know what it is, but every time I see or hear about Ryan being a little mercenary I love him even more. I just want to pat his egotistical little head.
Second, I never realized all the shenanigans that went on during Kelly's audition. She sang Madonna's "Express Yourself" and in critiquing her Randy, who went first, talked about how he'd worked on that song, which caused Paula and Simon to fake-snore in annoyance. His defense that he loved himself, thanks, had Kelly calling him a star, leading him to switch places with Kelly and "audition" himself. Kelly took his place at the judges' table and they all sent Randy to Hollywood. After all that sillyness—and my goodness, with the eventual winner already showing the personality we all know she has—the three judges sent her through to Hollywood, Simon on the condition that she tell Ryan he needs to redo his highlights. So there was a biscuit for my little shipper soul, too!
