I just looked back and realized that while I haven't posted about PR in five weeks, those five weeks consisted of a non-elimination, a reunion show, a skipped week, and a two-part finale. I mean, five weeks with the same four designers!
Anyway, going back to the non-elimination, as we all know all four of them would have shown in Bryant Park anyway, because of spoilers, having the judges use that fact to not have to make up their minds was a smart move. I think the real problem was that they knew that Michael had been strong all season and a fan favorite, and Jeffrey had also been strong and had such a unique point of view that to lose either of them for what really was just a misstep would have been a mistake. That said, I think Michael's confusion foreshadowed his confused collection. Like Daniel, he's an amazing craftsman who has great ideas within the confines of a challenge or a design brief from a client, but hasn't yet developed a singular point of view when given no boundaries. But also like Daniel, I'm certain he'll get there.
The reunion show wasn't quite as drunken as a Magical Elves reunion often is, but it certainly was confrontational. Keith is still an ass and I'm sort of glad he didn't go further; Vincent is still a freak show and I'm certainly glad he didn't go further. I'm so pleased that Malan is doing well, and I hope that Allison, Robert and Kayne also get good things out of the show. I still want P to date Robert so I can be pals with him and I'm not ashamed to say it.
Thanks to Laura's accusations the two-part finale was dramatic enough to not need a lameass last-minute challenge, and thank goodness for that. Tim was adorable both on the home visits and the tearing up on the "last gather 'round." We just love us some Tim Gunn, yo. It was fun to see Michael invite Tim to a family dinner at his cousin's house, or Jeffrey and his "I'm a rocker" endless shelves of albums, or Uli out on the beach, or Laura calm in the chaos of her daily life. Given the collections I'm really satisfied with the winner; Jeffrey definitely showed the most interesting creative vision and the clothes were surprisingly wearable for how rock and roll they were (and what a perfect song he used). I agreed with the judges on everything else as well: Laura's was gorgeous but too one-note; Uli's was fabulous but not quite as interesting aesthetically as Jeffrey's. Go Jeffrey!
