I need a Keith Moon icon AND a Butch Vig icon, so if anyone knows of a place to get pics of musicians in general or someone doing the same, let me know!

So tonight after So You Think You Can Dance I was floating around the channels and found that VH1 Classic (which is sort of an Gen-Xer oldies music channel) was doing a countdown of the top 20 movie soundtracks as voted at their website. The list is pretty good, and follows, but the great part is that the Rocky Horror fans totally hijacked the poll, putting a link to it on the fansite and asking everyone to vote. How awesome is that? And how clever is it that when VH1 saw that they'd made it #1, they were like, you know, rock on, fans—they even put the whole story in their TV countdown. And you know, you kinda can't argue with it. I mean, "Time Warp" is really the only group dance I can support.

So what do you think of this list? Me, I'm sad not to see Repo Man, which would have received my vote!

20. Almost Famous
19. Pretty in Pink
18. Tommy
17. This Is Spinal Tap
16. The Bodyguard
15. Trainspotting
14. Pulp Fiction
13. The Breakfast Club
12. Dirty Dancing
11. The Doors
10. Eddie and the Cruisers
09. 24 Hour Party People
08. Footloose
07. Valley Girl
06. Top Gun
05. Singles
04. Saturday Night Fever
03. Dazed and Confused
02. Purple Rain
01. The Rocky Horror Picture Show

So then I'm going to bed, and randomly flicking around a little because I'm not quite quiet enough for lights out, and lo, there is Garbage, randomly on PBS on some show called Soundstage. On goes the TIVO and I went back on chat because if Garbage is on broadcast TV, [livejournal.com profile] bhanesidhe must be told! And now, I sleep.

Apparently NOT a repeat (http://garbage.com/news/news.php?uid=331). o_0;

Butch? No butch...my world is making less and less sense.

Dude, I need me some Eddie and the Cruisers.

I poked around and sadly Thirteen was only showing it last night at 10 and then again at 1, which is the one I caught on the TIVO. 21 and that weirdo NJ channel aren't showing it at all. However, according to the set list on the website the only song that got cut off was Queer so we'll live, not that someone you know won't have some bootleg at some point.

What I can do is get that Pearl Jam tape from you and put this on the second half of it, unless you feel that Garbage and Pearl Jam are like gravy and cranberry sauce and you don't want them touching.

mmm, Michael Pare. As the host pointed out, he even looked hot at the end in the beard.

Okay, seriously? How can you not have any Butch? I mean, when I was in Madison for a wedding I wanted to stalk him, actually. God I love drummers.

Brick has been all over my flist this week because it's playing up in Boston now.

Okay, I have long-standing right to be BRICK's #1 East Coast fan-girl on account of me pinning for the mo' for near to a year. Just sayin'.

That aside, Garbage isn't Garbage without Butch Fucking Vig. It Just Isn't. As a life-long drummer enthusiast, I have a great respect for that man, visionary as he is. He picked and weeded through genres to stake his claim. He and Duke selected Shirley as their vocalist and pulled her out of UK obscurity and brought her into international fame. If it hadn't been for his long-standing vision and creativity there Would Be No Band. So.... Unless he's bleeding out of no less than three orifices, I can't think of a reason legitimate why he was not on that stage. It just feels wrongs, so wrong.

*prays for his well-being*

As far as PJ + G, I feel like quoting Joey, when the rest of the friends are all Joey how can you stomach that and he's with the whole. "Beef, good. Jam, good!" and consumes it like a vacuum. Bring it baby, bring it! XD

I'm pleased to see Top Gun, which is my on-the-train-to-court soundtrack par excellence, but I'm a little disappointed not to see Empire Records!

Top Gun, which is my on-the-train-to-court soundtrack par excellence

The idea of you on the train with "Danger Zone" blasting out of your ipod as you psych up for court fills me with glee. Clearly you feel the need, the need for . . . justice!

I'm suprised because although Empire Records wasn't a hit in the theater, it was a huge hit on video and the soundtrack is one of those records a lot of people just kind of have. But VH1 don't do the best job pimping out these polls so I think the cool kids just didn't vote.

Actually, it's "Mighty Wings", which was also the official team tune for my Oxford college's boat team...

Grease is not on that list! Alas and alack!

(My favorite soundtrack is actually Reality Bites, for it has Locked Out, some U2, Lisa Loeb's Stay, and most importantly, Tempted. It is truly wonderful.

I really thought Grease was going to be #1 since it hadn't shown up yet, though that would have surprised me that it was up that high. I was going to say that maybe they DQ'd it because it was an actual musical instead of a compilation soundtrack, but Purple Rain is sort of like that, too, though not all the songs are performed in the film—some, like "Take Me With U" are just background for some scene. So I dunno. Now that you mention it I'm surprised Reality Bites wasn't on there but I think Singles got that vote.

One of my favorite soundtracks is from Some Kind of Wonderful. Also, no Sid and Nancy? Surely Sid and Nancy is a better soundtrack than The Bodyguard, because, really, what else came off that soundtrack than I Will Always Love You?

Well, it's enough, but there was also that really excellent cover of "I'm Every Woman" and "Run to You" was also a huge hit. AMG has an interesting review of it (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=&sql=10:wpaxlf0egcqo); note the remark about Nick Lowe. (If the link doesn't work, just go to allmusic.com and search for The Bodyguard under "albums.")

It is the best selling soundtrack of all time, after all, and this is a popular vote countdown, not a critical choice countdown, so I would have been surprised to see Sid and Nancy.

Keith Moon

I'm not sure what sort of photo you were looking for for the Keith Moon icon, but you're more than welcome to take the icon I have; it's from a pretty old shot, but it shows the boy in all his beauty. :)

The photo was taken by Tony Fletcher, who also wrote a really great 'life and death of Keith Moon' bio, if that's of interest.
