Yeah, I decided to post about So You Think You Can Dance. Now, the way to win this competition is to just plunge right into the dances that aren't your own style and show you can do them just as well as the stuff you're used to. That's what Nick did last year and you can see who is going to work that out this year already.

By the way, has anyone read Nigel's bio? It was always clear that he was a choreographer but picturing him dancing at 10 just makes me gleeful.

Last year vs. this year:
  • I like Cat Deeley so much better than Lauren Sanchez (who actually just had a baby the other day), but the dresses she wears are very strange on the top. It's like they emphasize her smaller breasts without really making them look good or working with them and let them drop down near her waist or something. But she's cute and charming and keeps things moving and wow, she's really tall.
  • Hurrah we have a results show this year!
  • I also like that they are rotating in more judges so we don't have to hear Mary screaming every single week. I wish Mia hadn't chopped off all her hair, though. I love Dan Karady because he's tough without being harsh; I bet he's a real inspiration to work with.
  • Having everyone have the same partner all the way through is a great idea, too, and they paired them up brilliantly so that they will have to help each other out.
  • The changes in the judging—having the judges decide who goes after the voters pick the bottom three—is absolutely the right move. I think Nigel was so pissy that Jamile made the finals he had to work out how to not make that happen. But as I said to [livejournal.com profile] praetorianguard, dancers have to rely on professionals like the judges to get jobs, while pop singers rely on the general audience to get popular. Making the judging different than Idol makes a lot of sense.

My favorites from the auditions straight through Vegas: Donyelle, Natalie, Benji and Musa.

Last week:
What a great opening dance sequence! Also fun to see Nick again; he was just superlative.
This week it was the boys bringing it in dances they didn't know, and Benji, Musa and Ryan certainly did that!
Clothing: What the hell was Nelly Furtado wearing? Were those bloomers? And Cat looked like a giraffe in the results show.
  1. The amazing: Donyelle and Benji, Martha and Travis
  2. The good: Heidi and Ryan, Aleksandra and Jason, Natalie and Musa, Jessica and Jaymz
  3. The iffy: Joy and Dmitri, Allison and Ivan
  4. The bad: Erin and Stanislav, Ashlee and Ben

Needless to say, I didn't really agree with the bottom three, though I did agree with who was sent home. Ashlee and Ben got that old "Simon effect" of being harshly judged and saved by the voters but I also think that was the fault of the choreography. I was hoping Ashlee would go so Ben could get a new partner. Jessica and Jaymz didn't belong there at ALL and the judges made their point very clearly, as they did with Ivan being the one who forced Allison to dance for her life. Everyone except Stanislav had good solo routines, too. I think it was a pretty easy decision this week.

This week:
Another great opening number!
Going outside their comfort zone in amazing ways this week: Martha and Travis both, Doneylle, and Musa.
Clothing: Ashlee needs to take off that silly ass hat.
  1. The amazing: Martha and Travis, Donyelle and Benji, Natalie and Musa. I love that they were all grouped together to find out they were safe on the results show. They're really the three couples to watch.
  2. The good: Jessica and Jaymz, Allison and Ivan
  3. The iffy: Heidi and Ryan, Ashlee and Ben, Aleksandra and Jason
  4. The bad: Joy and Dmitri

The female elimination was pretty easy, but Aleksandra was lucky that Joy just kept sucking, because her solo was not good, and her dancing like a white girl is why they ended up in the bottom three in the first place. In a sense, she's why Jason was out. Dmitri was clearly in after that crazy solo.

I've tried that once. There was this DJ at this one place that would throw wacky stuff at us for the heck of it. I think it was a White Wolf party actually. He did hard house then disco then russion folk dancing. It was hard but I did my best.

It is so infrequent that I say something youz people don't understand and quite often the contrary in reverse because I'm always behind in the news around your camp fire. Please forgive me if I take perverse pleasure in saying this as silly as it may be. A white wolf party is just a party hosted mt White Wolf Publishing. At Dragon Con then have some influence so their parties are usually quite good. That's it.

I missed the results last night. :(
But glad to hear Joy's gone.

Donyelle and Benji are my faves...so far.

But I can't stand Cat. Maybe I'll warm up to her as the season continues.
