Downside of making chowder with soy milk: It's kind of a brown-gray color.

Upside of making chowder with soy milk: I can eat it.

To be honest, the constant bashing of soy milk gets me a little down. I'm not drinking it as some yuppie affectation. I don't think drinking soy milk makes me a lightweight asshole. I continue to be mystified by the depth of contempt people have for the concept of putting soy milk in coffee (though I don't drink coffee so maybe I'm a lightweight anyway). If you don't like soy milk that's fine, but to feel that you always have to make a noise of disgust when it's mentioned is seriously rude, because it implies that anyone who does drink it is, well, something negative anyway, and certainly defensive.

I don't really get that need to put down what other people like just because you don't like it, especially when it's harmless and sometimes necessary.

Oh GOD *rolls eyes* That someone would actually care enough to be so negative about someone drinking soy milk is utterly ridiculous. I get that a lot when I talk about vegetarian dishes I like (despite the fact that I most definitely am not a vegetarian). Geez, I just LIKE it, and the fact that it is vegetarian or vegan doesn't really factor into it.

My mother is allergic to cow's milk and thus had to drink soy milk as a baby. There are 574359784389053 million reasons someone might choose to do that (or eat any kind of food). People just need to shut up abotu stuff like that. I don't personally care for the taste of soy milk, but I couldn't care less if you drink it or not! :))

When I was 15 I had to get all these tests because I was nauseated all the time. I got an Upper GI and then we started taking things out of my diet—first eggs, then milk. When the milk worked my mother said, "Oh, that's right, you had to have soy formula!" Way to be helpful, MOM.

I'm sure it would have been different had I switched right from cow's milk to soy milk, but I had fifteen years of drinking no milk at all in between, and I have fallen right out of the habit of drinking milk. Having a latte is about as close as I come.

Ahaahahaha helpful mother!

I've never been a big milk fan, myself. My mother never really drank it (though she's fine with cheese and such) and hates anything with thick creams, milkshakes, etc. So I'm really not in a habit of drinking it. I do take milk with tea and there is the occasional Starbucks run, but that's about it.

Frankly, the only kind of milk I have trouble with even skim milk (in that I don't like it--I prefer whole milk) so the idea of showing contempt over what milk people drink is a little strange to me. If anything people tend to tell me it's strange to like whole milk.

What is with the milk police? Are we unAmerican unless we drink 2%?

Well of course you wouldn't get it. Duh. You drink soy milk. :P

You are an evil woman and the only reason I'm friends with you is because I fear you, clearly.

(You are so punchy today!)

Question: Oreos + soymilk = delicious? SIN AGAINST NATURE?

Discuss.

Have you had oreos with soymilk? I haven't done it, which is why I haven't had oreos in decades, but perhaps we should try that sometime! My vote is for delicious of course.

You know, I feel that this gaping, oreo-shaped hole in your heart must be filled. If soymilk is the answer, SO BE IT.

Otherwise, the quest continues. ;}

What, really? What is the problem with soy milk? The only time I've had it I felt it was a little rich (though I think it may have been vanilla flavoured, if I recall correctly) so I haven't had it again, but it wouldn't occur to me to care that anyone else was drinking it. I dislike skim milk far more, at least by itself. As for in my coffee, I really can't tell the difference between milks and half and half and non-dairy creamers in there. Truthfully, I don't even need cream in my coffee. I can't taste it, but I think it looks pretty when I put it in, so I do.

My friend Dan always puts half and half in his coffee because he just puts in a little and then isn't adding water. Anyway that's his rationale. Soy milk is rather rich whether it's vanilla or regular; the vanilla is just sweeter and more milk-like. That said, vanilla can make things taste creamier than they are (like cream soda).

Cream in your coffee does look pretty. I appreciate that you aren't trying to look hard core by leaving it black.

I think maybe part of the issue is that soy milk was recently trendy. I think part of people registering ick is that they are either like, that is so last thursday! or, alternately, think they are being reactionary against a still-current trend.

That's jsut a guess. I have noticed this tendency when expressing clothing likes and dislikes, and attributed people's reactions to their assumption that the only reason I might like wooden jewelry (for instance) is that I am liking it to conform to a look, and they disapprove of either this goal in general, or the specific look they assume I'm trying to conform to.

Hopefully the only people who think you are reacting to a current trend are people who don't know you very well. I can't think of any friend of mine who is less likely to base their preferences on a trend, pro OR con, than you.

Still, there's "I don't care for that" or "I've seen a lot of that lately and I'm over it" and then there's "How could you like that?" which is, IMO, impolite.

My 9-year-old can't have dairy except in very small quantities, so he really loves his coffee with soy milk (decaf, you know, because NINE). But I'm always getting shit from people telling me I'm going to ruin his hormonal development etc. letting him drink so much soy milk.
