because this book I'm reading, I hate this book.

So I forgot to mention in the last post, this week's American Idol theme is the American Songbook, with Rod Stewart as the guest. Kinda lukewarm on the Rod I must admit—my sister is like, his hugest fan ever so I've heard a lot of him, particularly one Christmas when we listened to nothing but Rod Stewart because her husband had bought her the Storyteller box set. As for the American Songbook, I think Katharine and Paris will be fine, Elliott and Kellie and Taylor will be okay if they don't pick the wrong song, Ace needs to be really careful, and who knows what will happen with Chris because we've gotten to a category he won't be able to fake his way through. If he gives into it, and just stands there and fucking sings a nice song, he will be fantastic. I love the American Songbook, so I'm really looking forward to what they will select.

I just realized that I won't be entirely bereft of TV this summer because So You Think You Can Dance is coming back. Not exactly TIVO filling stuff but hey, it's summer.

Man, I really wish you watched Big Love -- it's so delightfully dysfunctional.

In a way I think I don't really want to pick up any new shows. My spring is always sort of rushed but you know, 5 1/2 hours of can't miss it telly every week is a lot and more than I should probably be watching. I'm vaguely looking forward to just getting rid of HBO altogether. I never would have thought that I'd be like, okay I'm kind of done, but there is some TV that for me may be going the way of the magazine, in that I used to love this stuff but thanks to work I kind of worked my way out of it and now I'm seriously selective, almost resistant. Which is very, very strange, I can't even tell you.

No, I get what you mean.

Like, watching Breaking Bonaduce made me turn off almost all reality TV. I suppose right now the exception that that is AI. I still enjoy dysfunctional shows... but ones that aren't real. Watching Danny self-destruct was ultimately just me feeling like mortified on his behalf, because he was just that embarrassing and that much of a loser. And I felt sad for him. I don't think I'd ever want to go back to that kind of a show, which I used to really love. Traditionally I've enjoyed things like Talk Soup (in the Kinnear days) and beyond. But, not so much anymore.

I just watched The Soup last night. I think it's only on once a week now and not nearly as reliant on daytime talk shows as it used to be. But MAN it was funny. I recommend. Also Best Week Ever because it is awesome.

I don't think anything could ever top Breaking Bonaduce in terms of just sort of sheer horror and can't-look-away fascination. But the reality shows I like are the talent competition ones like AI and So You Think You Can Dance and Project Runway and Top Chef because you can be a vicarious judge even if there isn't viewer voting and it has a nice balance of a little bit of personal conflict but a lot of just, getting the job done. Very little of that Survivor-esque strategic bullshit of alliances and all of that. Either the dress looks good or it doesn't. Either you made a good dish or you didn't. So that show on after AI where people have to give the money to one person or whatever? No thank you. I don't need to see strangers sitting around shouting at each other.

Oh, and I forgot to say that I just like chatting TV with you, and I wish we had more mutual shows -- that was really the underlying basis of my comment ♥
