Rainy Saturday
Apr. 8th, 2006 03:09 pmWhee, I'm reading about the steel industry!
So I said this on
nmalfoy's LJ the other day and I hinted at it in my results post but I really think that the whole anti-gay thing hurt Mandisa and that's why she's gone. You simply cannot be a successful large and in charge black diva without that gay male fan baseāask Martha Wash. There was the rumor that her comment about "lifestyle" before the gospel song last week was a reference to homosexuality. In her profile on the AI website she mentions her admiration for Beth Moore who according to some (including The Advocate) has put some anti-gay remarks in some of her works. But Mandisa is unrepentant, as you can see from her interview in The Advocate. As one blogger said, she had two groups of fans: those who shared her religious journey and knew what she was talking about (and probably winced along with her when Paula and Ryan suggested after her gospel song that viewers worship Mandisa; talk about missing the point) and the gays who just love a big black diva. Gays moved their votes elsewhere, and this is the outcome. Which, while I really liked Mandisa, is kind of amazing.
Here's that wiki bday meme. What I find most interesting as I read them is which events/births/deaths people pick. Just want to recommend that folks check out their birthday year as well as their birthdate; my actual birthday was two weeks after the Tate-LoBianca murders and a month before Abbey Road was released.
Events:
1833 - Slavery abolished in the British colonies
1889 - First wireless message from a ship to the shore received.
1962 - First live television connection between the United States and Europe, via the Telstar satellite.
Births:
1912 - Gene Kelly, American dancer and actor (d. 1996)
1947 - Keith Moon, English singer and drummer (The Who) (d. 1978)
Death:
1926 - Rudolph Valentino, Italian actor (b. 1895)
And, hey, my birthday is also Vulcanalia! Let's be sure to throw a fish into the fire!

It's like, Mandisa, signifier of modern identity politics and their breakdown in the Bush II era.

Date: 2006-04-11 11:26 pm (UTC)Am I disappointed in her ignorance? Yes.
Am I sorry I stopped voting for her? No.
But I don't think she should be vilified as "teh Great Evol1!" The GBLT community has bigger enemies than Mandisa, and she certainly has time to become more enlightened. We need to pick our battles-- and fight fairly, without lowering ourselves to hate speech.
