jlh: a sign in Lynchville, ME that shows distance to various Maine towns named after countries/cities (Paris, Norway, etc.) (Maine sign)
It's times like these that I wish I was still registered to vote in Maine. One of the two female moderate Republican senators, Olympia Snowe, made headlines the other day by publicly breaking with the president over Iraq. The other, Susan Collins, is up for reelection and looks vulnerable. At this point she's still supporting the president but both the Democrat who will be running against her this fall and various groups are pressuring her hard. I wish I could put my vote in.

In addition, I got an email from HRC about a bill before the House for gay rights. Were they asking me to write to my congressman for him to support it? Er, no. They were asking me to write to him to thank him for being the sponsor of the bill. Ah, Jerry Nadler. I mean, I live in a neighborhood that's getting gayer all the time as it gentrifies and my district includes Chelsea and the West Village. My city councilwoman is a lesbian. You have to be gay friendly around here just to get elected.

The All-Star game is over so I'll be paying attention to baseball now. The Red Sox are notorious for leading their division in the spring and then fading after the All-Star break, so let's hope that they keep up their big momentum this year.
