and also any of you, but it made me think of her. I'm watching an American Masters doc on Fitzgerald, and in it E.L.Doctorow says:
Paradoxically it's the complacent writer—who thinks that everything's fine and that he's a master, that everything he does is beautiful—that's the writer in trouble. The one who's self-doubting and tormented, never satisfied with what he's doing, that would be happy for five minutes after the book is completed and then tormented ever after because it wasn't the book he wanted—that's the writer you trust, that's the writer who'll do something good.

[livejournal.com profile] epicyclical has a great post of links for how to help the victims of Katrina, and if you're looking to help the animals, [livejournal.com profile] evil_erato points out one place her vet recommends.

And on that topic. I know some of you have posted expressing dismay about the looters, and I think you all should read [livejournal.com profile] angiej's post with her thoughts on the subject. You may not agree, but it's provocative and I think it deserves to be heard, as does the post she links to which says things incredibly eloquently.

My mom and I were discussing the looting and basically decided that if it's not actively hurting someone else/disrupting search and rescue efforts, we just don't care what people're up to.

That being said, I'm gonna differentiate between the people who're getting groceries and baby formula and the people who're making off with DVD players. And there's still a special circle of hell reserved for stealing the backup generators from hospitals.
