First, briefly: I am either a Hippie (when I'm feeling extroverted) or an Emo Kid (when I'm more introverted).

Okay, so I have decided to go the box and sleeve route for CD storage as I am about to go back to graduate school and need the shelf space for books. I have narrowed it down to two boxes, that come in black or red, and I'll likely need about six boxes total. My studio apartment has cobalt blue walls and a red couch and curtains. (For those of you familiar with my layout, I'm moving my black bookcase from next to the chair to inbetween the entertainment unit and the bureau—where the silver CD towers are now. I'm putting the new wood-toned bookcase where the black one is now.) So the long wall will go window—>black table—>cherry bureau—>black bookcase—>steel and pine entertainment unit—>red couch—>cherry hope chest—>wall.

Thanks!

I was going to vote red, but it sounds like between the wall color, the various wood tones, and the red couch and curtains, you already have a lot of color variation and the red boxes might not be so much an interesting accent as perhaps result in a bit of color clutter. The black boxes would be cool but also more visually quiet/subtle.

On the other hand, if in your opinion (since you know what the place actually looks like, whereas I'm going on minimal info and guesswork) a bit of additional red as an accent color *wouldn't* be too visually busy, I would change my vote to red, because the red boxes are very cool also. :)

I'm not generally a big fan of black but I think in a case like this, it would be best. For long-term, it will go with any decor, no matter when else you might have to resort to the boxes for space, or what other apartment you might inhabit later on. And it will be a nice quiet counterpart to all the color it sounds like you've currently got.

How sturdy is fiberboard? That would be my one concern with either color, that the boxes could take wear and tear without looking worn, or falling apart in a few years.

I know black is a classic, but I think with your current decor that red will go best. Also? I think it suits you better and will actually travel very well with you should you ever move.
