My life and more HBP thoughts.

I'm not late for work. I'm not on vacation. I never have to go back there again. (Well, actually, I have to go back today and get a few things that were in my office and were too awkward to carry, but that's it.) Expect me to keep saying this, in this same sort of dazed way, likely until I actually start school.
I didn't actually purchase a new computer yesterday because I want a bigger hard drive so I have to buy it online. So I'll do that today, and it will be here when I return which is pretty awesome. August will be all about getting ready, getting organized.
One non-spoilery thing I love about new canon is that people come out of the woodwork and post again, or people who have been posting about not much other than various manga and television shows suddenly make a huge HP canon post. It's so much fun to just keep hitting refresh and see what someone else has to say, to watch the theories floating around, the initial reactions. And it's also so fun to have had fun with an HP book again, to have regained my trust in JKR.
I love that
deamus is the only shipper comm I'm on; someone's already posted about that one ickle shippy moment. I also have the best fucking fellow H/H shippers on my flist. No drama, no woe, just steady on, which is as it should be. More on that later.
Speaking of which, hurrah for AUs. Hurrah for what-ifs. Hurrah for the separation of canon and fanfic. Hurrah for fanfic that gives us what canon doesn't.
I can't wait for the book 6 movie to see Alan Rickman play those final scenes. (I hope that Dan is up to the Harry of 5 and 6; hell, I hope that Dan was up to the Harry of the end of 4.) I also can't wait for Maggie Smith to kick ass in movie 5, for the casting of Umbridge and Slughorn and all those aurors (Kingsley OMG so hot he will be).
I can't believe that this is all going to be completely over, books and movies, in what, six years tops? I can't wait for book seven, and yet, I wish this could be never over.

Date: 2005-07-18 03:43 pm (UTC)fwiw, I was glad when Dean divested himself of Ginny ;) and shouldn't Seamus have been commentator?

Date: 2005-07-18 03:55 pm (UTC)I agree completely. Multiple times during the reading, I snickered and when the friend I read it together with wanted to know why, I read her the sentence and exclaimed excitedly, "AU starting point!!" We have since had long discussions about how she can't seem to shake the feeling that the only reason why I like canon anymore and the new book in particular is because it's splendid grounds for fanfic.
I see it in a completely different way - I am ecstatic that the new canon goes into the direction of 'verse I like, yes. I am also very happy that Snape got so much attention, since he remains one of my favourite characters, and of course I am t00bily excited at the Snarry fanfic options this new canon developments makes possible. But that is not to say that I don't value canon above all, whatever happens in it. I would have been just as happy if Harry had started dating Ginny... oh wait, that happened, and in a most nauseating way. :D
So yeah. I get my slashy needs from fanon and that way am quite relaxed and happy to see canon do whatever JKR wants. This is all well and good, as far as I'm concerned.

Date: 2005-07-21 04:05 pm (UTC)Personally I found that Harry/Ginny moment to be sort of cool and sexy, though I know not everyone is as happy with canon!Ginny as I am, so I understand the reluctance. Mostly, though, it was infinitely better than any H/G fanfic ever was or ever could be, which is most of what I was hoping for.

Date: 2005-07-18 04:02 pm (UTC)You know, I was determined to not read flist comments about the book this time around, but I have the most wonderful flist in the world, and everyone has such interesting things to say, and positive things (which, whew). *lurve*

I'm so with you on this.

Date: 2005-07-21 05:19 pm (UTC)Tom had better be up for it, is all I'm sayin'. We sort of rolled the dice with these kids some years back and I don't really think recasting is in our future, do you?

It does seem as though all talk of recasting has ceased, so Dan and Tom in particular are going to have some really tough material once they get to HP6. *fingers crossed*

Date: 2005-07-18 04:07 pm (UTC)Thanks babe! My mama'd kick my ass if I fell apart because something in Harry Potter "ain't go the way I wanted it to"... "much as we been through as a people," etc etc ad nauseam, and all that.
There is the moaning and groaning contingent amongst us, mostly people who joined fandom post OotP and the H/H in canon essay writers. Most of us who wrote the "megafics" on the ship really and truly didn't think that H/H would happen in canon... we're happy enough to retain our subtext delusions.
I liked the Harry/Ginny meself, thought Ron was too precious, and wanted to slap Hermione one. But the best part of this was DRACO, DRACO, DRACO. If I was one of those "eh, Draco's cool" people before, I am a screaming fangirl now. People were talking about how Harry was Teh Sex in HBP, whereas I want to off Pansy so *I* can stroke Draco's head in my lap. Mmmm. Yummy.
Excellent book. And just think, now that Ginny's no longer with Dean, field's wide open for SEAMUS!

Date: 2005-07-21 05:40 pm (UTC)I was going to make a post before the book came out when all the wank was going on about how this contingent of H/H shippers were making a significant tactical error in putting eggs in that canon basket. I always thought our leg up on certain arms of R/Hr was our indifference to what actually happened in canon, which always infuriated them. This idea that one should never ship what doesn't happen in canon completely comes from them and I find it baffling. Then again, I'm a slasher so they hate me anyway.
That said, OMG! The Harry-Hermione interactions in HBP made me even more of a devoted shipper than I ever had been! His bemused reaction to all her machinations—his calling her on her actions during the Q tryouts—so many other moments, so awesome!
Draco and Harry, both as sexy as they wanna be, which I found incredibly validating myself. As for Seamus and Dean, yeah, there's SO MUCH canon inspiration there!

Date: 2005-07-18 04:14 pm (UTC)Yes! That was what I was thinking while I watched PoA yesterday - I wondered if he'd read the book yet, and that if he had, he must be absolutely thrilled. Of course, this might be one of those things that JKR told him already, so maybe it wasn't such a surprise.
