Saw Sideways last night with CC&R and LOVED IT. SO funny, and so real in so many ways, and now I have even more of a crush on Paul Giamatti (who apparently is the son of Bart Giamatti and went to Choate and Yale).

I have also finished the crossword, though I fear that my week long battle against illness has been lost at last. I have a horrid cough that makes my head hurt, I'm sneezing like crazy and weaker than ever. I get up, clean for about half an hour, then collapse back onto the couch for an hour and a half. However, the bathroom is cleaned and the kitchen nearly so.

I have adium now and I'm loving it as I have good sounds and animated smilies and tabbed chat windows and AIM and YM both open so I talk to my friend P (who is on AIM) a lot more often. But I am on the verge of never starting any conversations with anyone online ever again. I keep pinging people who are not actually online which is so frustrating I have no words, as of course my first thought is, are they ignoring me? and then my second is, oh, I'm clearly a moron and now they will have an offline message from me and think, "I wish Clio would stop pinging me so moronically" and then they WILL ignore me. It's like this big tease, where YM tells me someone is online when they are not, or that they are not online when they are, or something. Anyway, if you want to talk to me, please ping me if you see me online.

What my lyric meme showed me, which I sort of already knew, is that I'm an album person rather than a single person. I've always loved album cuts and I feel like greatest hits are cheating, a bit. After all, the singles are not so much the best songs as the ones that the record company thought radio would love. On the other hand, ain't no way I'm buying 30-odd Elton John records, so I get it. It's just not what I like to do. I wonder if the other people who did the meme edited out the album tracks, or just don't have them on their ipod?

1. Promises are carved out of love, with a fire in the heart. "Soul Mistake", INXS
18. Millions played at monopoly, rolling the dice of their lives. "OId World, New World", INXS
Okay, all y'all that are liking the 80s music need to pick up Shabooh Shoobah like, now. The singles were "Don't Change" and "The One Thing" but the cd is great from start to finish.

7. Touches everything I have and it never goes away. "Music", Madonna
It was almost impossible to find a lyric in this song that wasn't a gimme but I guess I tried a little too hard.

10. All's fair in passion and war, but my disadvantage is, I fell in love. "When Love Goes to War", Berlin
I admit, I would have fallen dead over if someone had got this, but I was tired of skipping album cuts and obscurities. It's from their not-very-good third album.

11. You come from far away, with pictures in your eyes. "Gypsy", Suzanne Vega
This just means that neither Josh nor Ivy saw the meme.

16. The wounds she gave me were the wounds that would heal me "I Was Brought to My Senses", Sting
Good on you for not listening to late Sting, though I do really like this song.

17. Catch me if you can but don't delay. "Today", Talk Talk
This song mysteriously came on the TV-radio while I was writing this post. If you liked that No Doubt cover of "It's My Life" then I urge you to pick up "Natural History: The Very Best of Talk Talk".

Well, don't feel like a moron if you IM me and get no response. I probably am online, but had an away status message that has been lost. My cable goes down so often that my busy messages are gone instantly, even though I am still away hours later. So I have attempted to have a house-sitting message up all weekend, but it has not been staying.

Then I reckon that isn't you online right now . . .

Stupid YM. Also everyone with a sidekick endlessly looks like they're on when they are not, and some people never use their away when they should. However, I doubt I'd be this cranky about it if I weren't hacking up a lung.

I wanted to ask you how the shower went. Perhaps I will make a post in the other place so you can speak freely?

No, I am at Julie's. I wish YM would just sign me out when my cable goes down, rather than signing me back on as available, as it would be far less confusing.

The shower was okay, nothing of note really. Although, I am so not into the, let's announce everything she got and pass it around the room so everyone can see. If I ever have a baby, my shower is not even having the presents opened in full company. I will just open them later.

Maybe you should just quit out of YM and not have it start automatically?

Well, then that's not a shower, which is fine. I mean, there really isn't any other point to a shower except, let's see everyone's present, ooh. It's a "shower of gifts". Otherwise you should just say you want to have a nice brunch with your friends to celebrate the blessed event and they can bring shit if they want to. That's what my friend Sarah did instead of a bridal shower, actually, and it was nice. We still had silly games, like a quiz about Sarah that her sister made up, and we ate tea sandwiches and drank bellinis, so it was all the girlyness but no gifts. That might be more your speed. It's more mine; I don't really want to sit in a room and open boxes of lingerie and/or baby clothes, either.

How was the food? It's so funny, my reaction to these things always reveals my deep country roots.

Ghost World, nice. What is Endless Mike? Also, I have changed my LJ name.

Well, you know, baby clothes are cute and all, but I am just fine if I miss one of the gifts. I don't have to have it passed to the back of the room so I can see it.

The food was fine, but really just a salad and then several different choices of chicken, none of which were anything I liked so that I had to order mine plain. Which also made me think, like, what if someone there was a vegetarian?

Endless Mike was this bully on a show called Pete and Pete. Why did they call him "Endless" Mike? I just don't know. And why did he take it as such an insult? It was a great show, and the bullies had hilarious names like Endless Mike, Pitstain, Papercut, Gravy Breath, etc. Also, Iggy Pop and Steve Buscemi were on it.

*noses in*

I hate this public present opening thing in general. We're supposed to do it at kids' birthday parties too and it's a nightmare. The kid usually really wants to keep whatever it is that he's brought, and so even though he's excited to give it to his friend he's really just dying to play with it, and it gets everybody all completely freaked out, and I just hate it. I'd much rather just let the kids play and eat and hang out and open gifts post party. It's too weird and generally icky.

You have better taste than I do in music. I wish I weren't so predictable! I love discovering stuff outside of my usual urban fare.

And I hear you about Y!M, but since my fandom hiatus, people ping me less and I do more of the pinging. Feels better this way, somehow... anyway, I hope my post-teaching job is somewhere I have regular online access during the day.

My YM name was never public and now even the fandomish one that I had isn't working for various adium reasons so I need to refriend people with the other one, which I need to get around to doing.

I think music has a lot to do with having people around you who will pull you along. I'm lucky because my best friend C is a punk rocker and a big music listener, and then my friend D works at a major music label and gives me the benefit of his gratis. So I have these two guys who spend just about all of their time thinking about music—likely the way that you think about books—and since they know what I like they tell me what to buy or get me things. C's been my music sensei since we were in junior high and turned me on to so many bands, like the Cure and the Smiths. But the urban stuff has been my own discovery (not a lot of it on the radio in Maine in the 80s) so I find I'm very hit and miss there.

Have you seen Closer? I saw it the other day, and omg so good. (Also completely filthy, but that was part of the appeal.) Also made me think of you for some reason.

And some of us LIKE late Sting.

Me? Really? I wonder why? I will very likely see it in my pre-Oscar marathon.

That was a direct call out to you, actually, and when I posted that lyric I thought, well, David should get this but I didn't hear from you . . .

No idea, because it's not the type of film I associate with you. And yet I thought you'd like it.

Sorry!

I just wanted to chime in and say how much I loved Sideways! I was so disappointed it didn't get best picture--I know Hollywood loves the huge epic biopics, but Sideways--there's just no contest for which was the best picture of the year, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm a little confused. It did win Best Comedy or Musical at the Globes, over Ray. (The Aviator won Best Drama.) And it's nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. So which was the disappointment?

I haven't seen any of the other nominees so I can't make a call right now, but hopefully I'll have seen most of them by the end of next month!
