one week to go and so much to do! eep!
Dec. 18th, 2004 12:09 pmIt's the little things, truly. Today I went to the new CVS that opened down the street from me and found sundries that I could not at the Duane Reade and now I'm filled with glee.
Yesterday I had lunch at a diner with
ali_wildgoose where we exchanged gifts over her reuben and my pastrami with swiss—much grilled cured meat, melted cheese and rye bread. Very New York!
Last night went to a birthday celebration for
vomer with
rubydebrazier,
epicyclical,
tromboneborges and the visiting
mistful, who were fresh from bubble tea with
sistermagpie and
reenka. (I'm sorry I missed the chance to meet SM and see R again, but I have been told they will reappear tomorrow.) We dined at Rue 57 where the skirt steak is still bliss, roasted chicken amazing, tomato salad perfection. My companions even ordered a dessert I could resist, leaving me to sip tea nobly at the end of the lovely meal. We also had a really lame list to boo! hiss! over—top 50 nerds by one of those "things for men to buy" magazines. I think we all agreed that they got #1 right—the creator of D&D—but the rest was a disaster. However, I think it's fun to be indignant.
I returned home to a repaired front door, a working elevator, and hot water, which I will celebrate shortly by hopping into the shower. I even brought my laundry in this morning, and will tidy up around here, time permitting. However today, I mostly MUST SHOP. Unfortunately or fortunately, most of the people I must shop for, I'm spending the afternoon with, so I'm not sure how that is going to work.
Since it's the holiday season and I'll spend the day out in it, I'd say that today I'm thankful for New York. It is vast; it contains multitudes. It's tough, it makes you tough, it makes you a survivor, it brings out the best and the worst you can be (come on, did you think I could get through this without a Billy Joel quote?). It has been my home for eleven years now, though like nearly everyone else in the city I never think I'll be here this long. Then again I can't think of anyplace else I'd really want to live except perhaps Maine. Extremist I am. The jolt of the capital or the peace of the countryside but please, not the uneasy hush of the suburbs.

It's driving me insane and it's not really the way I want to live at all and I have no idea how to get out of it. And on that note, thanks for the cookie recipe. *wages war-by-baked-good*

Also good luck with the shopping!
