Thankful.

I don't defend my choice of friends anymore, to anyone. So I don't have anything to say about people talking about things they don't know anything about.

However, I can say that [livejournal.com profile] rubydebrazier is over the moon about the toys! You have taken a crap situation and made something amazing out of it and for that I thank you. About the drabble: no one really asked for one. (Well, [livejournal.com profile] tea_and_toast did, but I think that was mostly because she was all "Whee! Furuba!") I'm choosing to think this is because my flist gives without needed drabble and not because you distrust my ability to drabble. Said drabble will arrive later today, as I sit here waiting for the plumber.

Today, I'm thankful for the fandom. If not for fandom I wouldn't have met so many people who are true friends of mine; I would never have started writing fiction; I might never have rediscovered my intellect, long buried due to my industry, where I had to not be so smart. It has changed the way I think about the future, and it has brought me back to myself. I know it's not very fashionable to say that you've gotten anything from fandom, or that you care about it in any way, but you know, I'm willing to look like the totally lame geek I am. Thanks.

Eeeee! I'm so happy about the toys! <3

And you're right, the reason I didn't ask Sam or you to write anything is because I didn't NEED anything back.

We can all do some pretty amazing stuff sometimes, no? <3<3<3

incidentally, this lame geek would like to see you later this week if you have the time -- Thursday perhaps? -- and will be in town until she goes on holiday next friday ;}

*hugs*

Wednesday or Thursday are fine. I need to check with Emily first because I know she wanted to see me this week as well. You go on holiday on the 10th or the 17th? I'll be in Amherst this weekend, Friday through Sunday, and then in town all next week. It'll be great to see you! We can dish about holiday plans then.

Also, glad you're going over on Tuesday. I'm seeing my friend S that day so I can't join, but I know you'll have fun. You might want to bring your laptop over so you can watch DVDs. Talk soon!

Thursday is awesome, and would also love to see Emily so if she's around that'd be perfectly fine with me ^_^

As for holiday plans, YES! Have gotten you lame (as in OMGIAMADORK ) present. gift exchange must be discussed. muahaha.

Am also glad about tuesday, though my #$%@#$ laptop's DVD player is busted. WOE! will consider backup plans....

Alas, in the light of day, Emily has wisely decided to get her work done before she plays. So it's you and me, kid, on Thursday, and gift exchange can be discussed but not done, as I plan to shop in Amherst this weekend! Dinner after work? Where should we go?

Yeah, was thinking gift exchange next week, as hopefully cassie will be back in town! (personally, I plan to attack the Holiday Shopping Fair in union square on saturday, as was mega awesome last year.)

Dinner after work is perfect, and I would be happy with cooking or with someplace uptown, as is good to get out of the village. ;}

Cassie will be back AFAIK because she can get a free ride from Dionne on Sunday. I'm open all next week, and I'm trying not to work on Monday, so whatever works!

Hmm, up here. I'll think on it and call or email you later this week! :D

Val called last night, so we're shifted to here on Wednesday night. We'll meet at 7 and head over to the Amish and rustle up something for supper, and I'll send an email to Emily to tempt her to come out, ho ho.

[livejournal.com profile] ecwoodburn suggested late last month that people note what they are thankful for every day through the end of the year, so that we can remember the important things in the middle of the holiday stress, and I thought that was a great idea. So I'm trying to list something every day that is different but also particular to the events of that day. Though I do have a little list of people I'm saving for the end.

It is totally having the right effect. At the end of every day I think, what really was good today, what am I thankful for on this day? It's so refreshing.

I'm thankful for the wonderful people I've met due to fandom every day. Fandom in and of itself has had a huge impact on my life, many of the ways the very same ones that you've mentioned in your post.

Fandom can be incredibly wanky and horrid often times but there are always the good people and good things that have come from it. I choose to concentrate on those bright spots.

Me too. I'm sort of thankful for F_W because people can go over there and be as nasty as they want to be and I don't have to read it. It's just sad people feel the need to be that nasty. I mean, I get as jealous or envious as the next person, but I certainly don't revel in it!

About the drabble: no one really asked for one.

I, for one (and I'm guessing that I speak for just about everyone) don't need a reward for doing this. I help out RL friends in need with no expectation of a reward-- why should I expect one for helping out fandom friends?

And I'm thankful for fandom, too. It sucks sometimes, but right now it's being pretty awesome (except for f_w, of course, but that always sucks, so of course this is no different).

>:D

F_W is a lot of hypocritical pointing and laughing, plus a side order of insane jealousy. But I'd rather that people be able to spew their venom there, than come into my journal and do it.

Yeah, Sam wrote like 50 drabbles but I think his fangirls (of which he has many) and his flist aren't as close to CC as mine is.

NO! I DEMAND EXCITING FRUITS BASKET DRABBLE IMMEDIATELY! BECAUSE I NEVER GIVE ANYTHING WITHOUT EXPECTING SOMETHING IN RETURN! dude, just days! whee!!!

....

Also, one of the things I found most interesting about fandom community from the outside was how obviously dependent on it so many people were, but how unwilling they were to actually TALK about that and acknowledge it. It was like this enormous extended family of choice that everybody wanted to pretend didn't exist or wasn't important to them. It's good to talk about these things - very healthy.

Dude, I can't even deal with how much I need new Furuba. BTW, have you seen the anime? I wouldn't want to spoil you, as the anime is ahead of the manga. (I think the anime covers major plot through vol 8, but obviously not with the complexity that you see in the manga.) But I haven't read the translations people have of the current Japanese stuff.

I don't think people like to admit that they are one of those "online" people. There is still such a stigma! How funny that someone I know in RL recently revealed themselves as a Buffyslasher. Not entirely unexpected as she is such a fan I would have guessed she was in the Buffy fandom, though perhaps not a fic writer or even a slasher.

Also, I think among young, really intelligent people there is a need to pretend that you are entirely emotionally self-sufficient, that you aren't like those dreadfully boring people who actually need their social groups. Of course, I've gone on in the past about how fiction about misanthropic geniuses has confused people . . .

Totally lame geeks are the backbone of any decent society, as Harry S Truman might have said, but didn't.

And you know we wouldn't have it any other way.

Do you mind being randomly added by people who find you thanks to a charity effort? I appreciate the work that you, copperbadge and heidi put into this and I wanted to clear it with you before I add you to my Flist.

Oh! Thanks. No, I don't mind, though Sam should really get most of the credit.

Also, if you're interested in charity in general, may I ask that you check this post (http://www.livejournal.com/users/jlh/173509.html) out?

Better lump me in the 'lame geeks' seating section, too, as there's always something in the fandom to be grateful for. If it weren't for the fandom, I'd never have met my best friend, or taken 48 hour bus rides to Texas, or planned a successful HP conference, or gone to NYC and met amazing people. :)
